El Sancho is pushing out great tacos I was excited to attend the second Taco Festival in Scottsdale and taste all the traditional and innovative tacos. Taco's are one of my favorites and akin to cult-like devotion with me, and have been since I was a kid. In my hometown in New Mexico, there was a legendary drive through called Mac's Steak in the Rough, and I ate their taquitos every day. Years later my Italian wine importer, Richard Barazza, introduced me to Ben's Tacos in the Las Palmas neighborhood in El Paso. By far Ben's meat and potato taco is my favorite taco on Earth! Dip your Ben's taco in their fiery hot New Mexico green chile salsa and it is pure magic! I think the owner, Martin Terrazas, is a culinary genius on par with Escoffier. My Chuco town wife makes a decent Ben's knock-off fried taco for me, but only does it every month or two because I will devour twenty in two days. I simply cannot resist them. Note: I appologize to Chef Aaron Sanchez, my wife, and all the other wacky El Pasoans who believe that soupy mess that is Chico's tacos are the best in Texas!

However, I ate some delicious tacos at the Taco Festival yesterday that rival my Taco Pantheon. My favorite was from a suprising young street vending chef named Joel Cordes fron Bend, Oregon. He has an amazing steam punk post-apocolypse Taco cart, and he calls his business El Sancho. His logo looks like Jot with a huge bigote and it adds to his whimsical take.

Apparently, Sancho is scapegoat gremlin moniker of mischief in Mexico. No tricks in Joel's tacos, however, just pure treats. he had an incredible efficient system on his minimalist cart cook station and I loved his basura blanco taco clothes lines dripping the lard all over range. Joel, in Portlandia fashion, was dressed in his finest fire engine red Porter Waggoner Nudie Suit, and his lovely gal pal looked like a gypsy flamenco dancer with a clever sombrero hair clip to complete her look.

These poor Oregonians were melting in the tricky Arizona October heat that plauges the Taco Festival week-end, but they gamely faught on like legoinnaires in a scene from Beau Geste. I applauded them for putting out such a tasty delectable pork taco while remaining friendly and talkative with their inquistive Zonie customers. It is not everyday that Arizonans eat taco's from Bend, Oregon!

I hope that El Sancho comes back to the Taco Festival next year, as they prove you can teach an old dog some new taco tricks and treats. Viva El Sancho just around the Bend!
