#1527972 The Salad Thread

Posted by Muckyai on 14 February 2018 - 07:25 PM in Food and Beverage

Not much to look at but this is a pretty delicious salad. The world famous 1905 salad from The Columbia restaurant. Ham and Swiss cheese are just one of those things that are meant for each other.

#1526712 Yellow manzano seeds

That hadn't occurred to me either. Maybe I should rename my Aleppo peppers to something else so that big brother doesn't think I am giving aid and comfort to Syrian rebels.

I just gotta think those auditors were seriously bummed when they realized it was just pepper seeds. Lol

Omg. I got that same message from PayPal when I recently purchased Aleppo seeds. It didn't even occur to me that the name triggered the review of the transaction. That's kinda creepy.

#1526545 What grows in the blistering Fla heat?

Posted by Muckyai on 10 February 2018 - 07:35 PM in Growing Other

I'm scared to even say something in case I jinx them but I have never seen hornworms on any pepper plants. Only tomatoes. Is it pretty common to get them on peppers?

Something else that loves the Florida heat... Hornworms. I think I picked a hundred baby worms off my cherry tomato plant this afternoon. Those things are of the devil!

The spoils of gardening... No one in town had a fresher salad tonight. Topped it with some sesame crunchies, gold raisins, sunflower seeds and peppadews.

#1524318 MikeUSMC's Whiskey Barrel Smoker

Very good! I wouldn't bother buying it, since Malcom Reed posts the recipe himself online all the time. Then again, if you want to support his company, he seems like a helluva guy, so..... ;)

Killer Hogs' "A.P. Rub" ("All Purpose": goes on before the BBQ rub):
4 parts salt
2 parts granulated garlic
1 part black pepper

Killer Hogs' BBQ Rub recipe:
1 TBL of Sweet Hungarian Paprika
3 TBL of Chili Powder
6 TBL of Brown Sugar
2 TBL of Turbinado Sugar
2 TBL of Kosher Salt
1/4 tea of Ground Cumin Powder
1/8 tea of Ground Cayenne Pepper
1/4 tea of Ground Black Pepper
1/4 tea of Jamaican Jerk Seasoning
1/4 tea of Tomato Powder (or substitute Ancho chile powder)

^ It's really heavy on the sugar, which I like, because it almost guarantees a nice bark

And saved!! Thanks for that!

#1524287 Szchechuan peppercorns

Posted by Muckyai on 03 February 2018 - 06:12 PM in Hot Pepper Talk

Well darnit.. I found the Szechuan peppercorns at the Oriental market and just tried one.. it tasted kinda lemony at first but not tasty yummy lemon.. and no heat. I kept chewing on it and after a minute that numbing "dental" sensation Pookie was talking about kicked in. I spit out the peppercorn... And now 5 minutes later the numb feeling is still going on...

I'm gonna assume these guys taste better in the proper dish.. hopefully a LOT better. Will be going easy on them in the "ma po tofu" recipe.

Visiting with my mom today... Homemade bahn xeo.. that's not an omelet, it's a crispy crepe made with rice flour, coconut milk and a touch of tumeric... Stuffed with shrimp, pork, mung beans, and bean sprouts. Wish you all could have heard the mouth watering sizzling it was making as it cooked in the pan. It's eaten with lettuce and lots and lots of herbs.. and yes it was the AWESOME!

Since we are all coming out of the Buffalo closet, I gotta admit I too love that mango habanero sauce... And the vinegar and salt wings too. (Anyone successfully replicate the vinegar ones at home??)
