LancelBracken Grow Log 09/10

Hail! So i shall start another one of these threads for your forum clogging pleasure :-)

At the time of this post i am growing:
Bhut Jolokia
7 pot
Trinidad Scorpion
Aji Omnicolour
Bolivian Rainbow
Jalapeno
Orange Habanero
'Razzamatazz'
Mystery Ornamental

This is my first time growing seedlings, and apart from a brief forray into gardening when i was like 4, my first growing experience!

Today i repotted most of my seedlings from 1.5 inch seedling tray cells to 3.5inch pots. I used potting soil mixed with some perlite to help drainage.
I've never repotted before and im sure i will lose some seedlings. Some of them had very small root balls!!! I buried them a few cm deeper than they were before.

Here is pics!

My biggest bhut. (heh heh heh)

The ones that were not fortunate enough to make it just yet. Note the 5/5 cells of Jalapenos all not up. CURSED JALAPENOS. I have had to move these to window lighting as my fluro cage is now filled with the 3.5inch potted seedlings. I have given them back their heat mat though so that should help things.

These are some ornamentals that i got off a relative. I think they are "Razzamatazz" based off of info obtained through this forum (woo!). Basically a multicoloured ornamental with hot fruit. These were obtained at this size in significantly worse condition. They havent grown but look a lot healthier. They are only about 15cm or 6 inches tall. I was thinking of pinching all fruit but i am using it as an experiment to see how my ones grow compared to these.
The fruit seem to ripen from white to purple to orange to red. They have a low amount of spider mites on them which is what gives them the white specks. I dont think they are hurting the plant at this stage so im not bothering to do anything about it.

Finally, here is my largest chilli, a mystery ornamental from bunnings hardware store. I think its an anuum. It has orange fruit and has not grown much up, but has gotten much leafier. It is about 20cm/9inches tall. I ate all of its fruit when i got it home and it has about 40 buds on it which i am considering pinching but really want to see what happens considering we are in winter sort of now :)
Both this and the other ornamental get only window light for 4hrs in the morning then ambient from the open window through the day.

Hey there Lance, your plants look good mate. I'm doing a bit of a trial with some Jalapenos and I have 8/8 sprouted after only 7 days. How long after they sprouted did you get the light on them?

good looking seedlings...

if you don't pour the light to them when they pop thru the soil, they will get leggy...and running a fan over them to mechanically stimulate them will strengthen the stems (about 30 minutes twice a day)

3rd June Growth update

One week on update!!!
I haven't fertilized yet as the soil has stuff in it. I'm going to leave it till half way through this month and give 1/2 strength seaweed fertilizer in their normal watering. (about 600mL for all these seedlings, wednesday and sunday. This seems to be sufficient... The ones in the germinating tray get sprayed twice a day)

Comparison shot of seedings this week to last week!

1 month update

30th June update!

All chillis are in 80mm pots now and have been living in my new grow tent for several weeks.

I have a slight black fly/fungus gnat problem and i think they are eating my plants. Temperatures are also quite cold here at the moment but certainly not below 0 inside of a night so they are still doing ok, just a little slow.

Here is both trays, the top tray is the one featured in the previous shots, the bottom tray has the newer seedlings and some 'overflow' razzamatazz chillis i am using as guinea pigs.
The Bolivian Rainbows are HUGE, almost 6inches and are ready to go into 6inch pots soon i would say.

Some of them look a little yellowish, and some have leaf curl. I'm not sure what this is due to. This is an orange hab.

I have been fertilizing them with 1/3rd strength seaweed fertilizer once a month. I haven't given them anything else, i used to water twice a week 600mL water but now i am doing once a week 1.25L water cause i have a lot more pots. With the cold temps the pots weren't drying out much so i halved the water amount effectively.

Here's the grow tent, haha it's massive! I haven't even half filled it with my seedlings.

Just remember to start them with light weights and lots of reps. Don't want to pull something at the beginning of the season. ;)

Nice setup, but I don't think they are getting enough light if that's the size of them after several weeks. I started mine off under 2 40 watt CFL's, and then moved them to a closet about the same size as your tent. The next 3 weeks they where under a 400 watt where they where about 6-8" tall. The next 3 after that I put them under a 1000 watt light where they grow very big and busy. The plants are now around 12-18" tall and have been moved to large pots or dirt and are outside. A few are covered with buds and flowers and should be fruiting in a few weeks. I did end up having a problem with aphids and some lost leaves. Not sure if they caused a decrease in growth or not, but either way i'm on week 9 and should have fruit by week 12.

So i went and invested in a 600w MH light (retro, so runs on hps ballast), ballast, and reflector!!!!

Growth has been super slow under the CFL, i think its great for starting them off but they needed some more kick! I plan to grow them as large as possible now in the tent under the MH, and once spring kicks in i will use it to grow 4 of my favourite plants year-round!

Here are pics!

As you can see, growth hasn't gone anywhere really. The light is so bright it blew my mind. This is without flash...

Cool new reflector. Can adjust the concavity with the wires.

I have it hanging about 60cm from the chillis to be safe. I don't have any fans or ducting in the tent, heat seems to be not too bad, i just leave the flaps open slightly at the top, and have all the vents up top open. We are in the middle of winter. I might need to get a fan for summer. This pic doesn't do the brightness justice, lol, the camera spazzes out when taking pics of the lit MH globe

After a few days i will pot up most of the right tray, and also sort out some nutrient problems (a lot of the young ones on left have calcium issues, and i think tray on the right could do with some epsom salts. They aren't quite as yellow as photos indicate but they are a little.)

Growing woes!

Well it has been 2.5months since last update... we are now out of winter and into spring. Unfortunately i have been battling what i assume are nutrient deficiencies!

Most of my plants are very yellow and are dropping leaves, and the ones that aren't don't seem to be growing very fast.

I have been fertilizing every 2 weeks with 50% strength seaweed or fish fertilizer, watering twice weekly with enough to get some run off out of the pots, applying epsom salts every 2 weeks, and recently have tried watering in some dolomite lime.

They still never seem to green up :-( . I had an inkling it might be because they are rootbound, and upon inspecting one of my 7pots the roots were indeed circling the bottom of the pot, however they were not very tightly packed. Regardless i potted it up into a ~2gallon bucket as an experiment.

Here are pics! They are quite small considering most are 6 months old :-( not sure what i'm doing wrong!

Overall shot.

Setup shot. I now have an extraction fan installed which helps keeps temps to a max of 30celcius.

My best plants are the Bolivian Rainbows. They are all 20-25cm tall and quite branchy and bushy. Even they, though, drop a lot of leaves, and are growing slowly....
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w193/bracken2656/chillioct20097.jpg

My jalapenos are my tallest at 30+cm but i cannot get them to green up and they drop leaves...

Some, like this Trinidad Scorpion, seem to be going downhill...
chillioct20098.jpg

This is the unhappy-ish looking 7pot that i found was sort of rootbound. Since it's the same size as my other plants i guess they may all be rootbound? Perhaps that is what is causing the unhappiness. Will monitor how this fella goes in the new home.
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w193/bracken2656/chillioct20091.jpg

I gave this guy a teaspoon of dolomite lime 10days ago. He hasn't greened up much...
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w193/bracken2656/chillioct20096.jpg

This 7pot shows the problems that most of my plants have. Yellow, bumpy leaves, leaf drop, unhealthy looking new growth, slow growth.

Lancel...have you checked the pH of your soil? If the pH is not right, it could cause the plant not to take up the nutrients...just a thought..
