Take a n00b planting his first ever crop, seeds which are 8-10 years old, and a home made germinator, and your chances of success are..??

If they were very dry and stored in a dark, cool and dry place you have a chance.

I'd soak the seeds overnight with warm water, you can do tea or diluted bleach beforehand but thats up to you.

You can alwayse buy seeds online or at a garden center or some other place that sells seeds.

Remember the secret, cut the seeds in half so you get twice the chance of germination!

Nonono, don't mess with the noobs, remember PMD. He even folloed directions and screwed it up.

Touche.

I reckon that the Hunter has a pretty good chance, maybe around 50% germination. What are your thoughts?

It kind of depends on what species they are (ie: if they are hard to start seeds to begine with his chances are far deminished). Also, how were the seeds stored, in the refridgerator or out on the counter.

I say his chances are 20-30%, but like I said, anythings possable with the help of this site.

Hey Guys!

Yep, it certainly is a lottery and I cannot shed light on the storing of the seeds, but they were in a closed plastic container all along as I moved house twice.

I have a lot of viable seeds that I also sowed, but these seeds were a gift from a good friend, so I want to give them every chance.

Sorry, already planted before I got the soak info...:-(

I'll be happy with 20%, but I'll post the answer in a few weeks and you can see who was the most accurate...LOL!

It's alright IGGY, it's his own joke. I thought you read EVERY post on here :hell:

Of course, he also writes every other post.

Seeds 8-10 years old? If they are still viable (I'm sure at least some of them are) you have a pretty good chanse of complete success (meaning harvest of ripe pods). If they are not? Well, that is not your fault nor anything THPers can help you with;(

Oh, I think you would have over 55% germination. If you did it right.:) [warm paper towel method]
I don't know about the homemade germinator. I'll have to see it.
I was saying chances were low for full success after germination.
Losses: 5-6 % damp-off, 1% seedcase surgery death, 18% ungerminated, ?% priceless.

Ok, fellas....

The above mentioned seeds were sown along with around 300 others on 22 July and I have decided to release the results today:

The winner, and still champion of the Forecast The Future Squad, is....

well, whoever said I had less chance than a snowball at a naga convention!!:lol:

Yep, not a single seed germinated, (despite using the most expensive bloody potting soil on the planet) and despite warmth and water.

C'est La Vie...

HEH HEH!!

You had me wondering there for a mo'...!:lol:

Hell, I've lost another eight or ten to poor watering, but the rest of the troops have stormed the breech, and the Turks are on the run!:hell:
