hybrid Cross Pollenation

I only have a small plot (about 10' x4') plot to grow with and plan on growing a half dozen different pepper varieties next season.

If (or maybe I should say "when") they cross pollenate, will the mixed features be found when the pure bred plants grow the cross pollenated fruit or is the mixed nature only found when you grow the seeds from the crossed pollenation and the hybrid plant itself then gets fruit?

Can any type of pepper be crossed or do they have to be closley related? I wonder what a bell pepper/naga cross would be like :)

You won't know they crossed until you grow out the seeds.

Sometimes you get an interesting plant.

My Chiltepins seem to cross if I talk about another variety near them.

um.... this is about the 3rd cross pollenation thread chief

Search the forum, there was one by me and another one by someone else in which we referred to a handy table which shows which ones will mix and which ones will not.

Found it, thanks ('twas before I joined). Funny, they also brought up bell pepper/hot pepper crosses. :)

Pepper minds think alike.

New Idea for Lesson

I remember that thread!

Hey You Guys, (lol)

Gave me a new idea. When I teach punnett squares for mendelian genetics I can use hybrid crosses of chili plants. I will show the students pics of different species of chili's and assign them Alleles with dominant and recessive traits and then we will do a cross. We will predict what the genotypes and phenotypes will be for such a cross!!

Cool lesson that they will at least listen to since they know all about me and my hot sauce fetish.. lol

That is because.....

The cool thing is that, though I learnt those phrases 16 years ago, I still remember what they mean.

Nerd-tastic!

You are smart... :-) Most people into hot sauces seem to have a good idea about biology in general. I had to give my faculty a handout on the health benefits of chili's because they think I am some deviant/maniac/extreme person..

I got this cute faculty member there though that likes me I think. :-)
