Los Dos Molinos

This is so far the hottest Mexican food place I can find in the phx valley. I've been eating there for years. The Green Chili is awesome. Great heat, along with great flavor. I have never had a bad meal here, and have needed Ice cream afterwards several times. Come on Ice cream... :onfire: Need a cleanse? Go to Los Dos.
The Chips are great, and the green and red salsas are good and hot.
I actually don't think they have a non spicy item on the menu. I haven't eaten everything they offer, but judging from the sweat on every one else's face I get that impression. They list non spicy options, but I don't believe it.
Every time some one tells me they know of a spicier place, I try it. Failure after failure.

The only negative to Los Dos is the drink prices. Seriously, Margaritas should never cost this much ($29) unless they are using an entire bottle of Don Edwardo or Herradura in them. Damn. It sure doesn't taste like it has a good tequila in them, just a lot of a blah tequila.
It used to not be that way, but the times they are a changing I guess.

I like the Phx location better than the Mesa one, even though Mesa is closer to me. Phx just has a better atmosphere, and just seems to have a little more depth in the taste of everything. I have yet to try the Springerville one since every time I have tried they have been closed...

I love this restaurant!!!!! They have one in NYC ;)

As you can see I liked it the first time, but since, have loved it.

I recently tried this place for the first time, excited about the supposed heat... (The Ahwatukee location)

I was highly disappointed. I ate a chile relleno, and 1/2 of a green chile beef burrito.

Heat: The food, depending on which dish you order, did have some decent heat to it. The heat level was high enough to keep me moderately satisfied while having my wussy family sweating and hiccuping. However this category melds into the others, as the heat was not properly delivered in the new mexican style imo.

There were 2 types of salsa offered, both had a decent heat to them (green slightly hotter).

The relleno was not hot itself, but was smothered in a "green chile" sauce that contained some other smaller peppers that had some heat.

Green chile beef burrito was the same, heat came from the smothering sauce, specifically the little cooked peppers in it.

I decided that all the heat in every item I tried (including salsa) came from the same small little green peppers being added, (idk what variety, about the size and shape of 2 knuckles of your pinkie finger) which had a very bitter flavor.

Taste: The flavors of what I tried were somewhere between ok and bad. The chips that came out with our pre-meal chips and salsa tasted like they were cooked with month old stale oil. Almost sent it back but since it was free we just let them sit on the table after trying them. The two salsa's they brought out to the table both tasted unpleasant in my opinion, overly bitter due to whatever the little hot green pepper they use is, and not fresh or well balanced.

I judge "New Mexican" restaurants by their relleno. A real chile relleno is made with a numex style hatch chile (ie a long, fleshy, flavorful green chile with a decent amount of heat to it), pre-roasted, de-skinned, stuffed, and fried with a minimal amount of egg batter. The Los Dos Molinos relleno is made in the wrong type of chile, idk what it is, but its too wide and lacks in both flavor and heat, and on top of that it is wrapped in so much fried egg it could almost be considered a chile omelet. The heat in the dish did not come from the relleno chile itself, but again from those little green chile's that were strewn about my plate in the "green chile" sauce.

The green chile beef burrito actually tasted ok, but it was an utter gutbomb (super greasy and loaded up with those bitter little hot chiles).

"Green Chile" sauce... In New Mexico, this usually just means diced roasted Hatch green chile's, (occasionally may be cooked with some additional spices and some liquid to make it saucier). At Los Dos Molinos, it means some weird flour sauce (more like a red chile style), with an occasional piece of diced numex style chile in it, but accompanied by whole roasted small green chiles that kinda suck. Not authentic based on my experience, and not particularly good.

Overall: I would NOT recommend this place, especially to anyone who has ever actually eaten true New Mexican style mexican food... It would be an utter disappointment imo. Heat was good, but achieved with some really fowl tasting little green chile's that I think are used not to improve flavor, but rather as a gimmick to spice up dishes and push people to buy more margaritas. I cannot debunk their claim to using "Hatch" green chiles as I have no idea where they bought the chile's they use, but what they are using is not the "Hatch green chile" you can get all over New Mexico which tastes so lovely.

Then again, I've only been there this 1 time, maybe I just went in on a bad day...

I think Los Dos Molinos sucks...I have had way better traditional Rio Grande style New Mexican food at Si Senor in Chandler. Also, I believe that Los Dos utilizes Mexican chiles instead of the real McCoy. I really believe this place is hyped and the owner's daughter, Sheryl is rude and curt in her dealings as manager.
The staff is incompetant and the margaritas are garbage. I just don't see why people drool over this place?
