snacks Moldy Hickory Chips?

I just went to put another load of hickory chips in the smoker for the babybacks I have going. WTF??? My mold detector, (located next to my BS detector) didn't go off on the first load but....
Anyone had something like this happen i.e. smoked with moldy smelling chips? Does it impart the moldy flavor to smoke and thence to the ribs? I am hoping I didn't farm the whole rack and have to fire myself.

I wouldnt use them --- What you may be able to do is to spread them out and dry them... Im surprised that it was hickory I usually have probs with my mesquite...I started to put them in empty compound buckets. I have my charcoal, and wood chips in different buckets. If you go to job sites to get them shake'm first tapers use them other things too :mouthonfire:

I'm surprised too that it was hickory you had mold on- I also have more mold with mesquite. Rinse off the chips (hose 'em down) and dry them all the way in the sun. Try to leave them out where they get plenny'o ventilation, especially underneath. Unless it's more than just surface mold, you should be ok.

Thanks ya'll. The ribs actually came out fantastico with no moldy aroma. I tossed the chips though. I couldn't actually see any mold on the chips but the aroma was certainly strong when I poured out the container. I would have thought very dry wood would have an antifungal characteristic...but quien sabe?
