Hello Pepper Heads!

I've been a browser of these forums for awhile now and thought it's about time I signed up and said hello. I'd also like to say Thank you to everyone as I've enjoyed the chat, humor, and vast knowledge you gurus have!

My background with peppers and the reason I'm here is because I really am a huge Hot pepper fan, or as my wife calls me, a pepperfreak. I eat hot peppers daily for health reasons and pleasure and I can't get enough. I've never had a pepper to hot to eat but I'm still searching. I'm 31 from Pennsylvania 'USA' and have been gardening for about 10 years now, applying what little knowledge I know from watching my father while growing up. I usually grow just hot peppers, because every time I try to grow other veggies the darn rabbits or ground hogs eat them. I swear they are like little ninjas that can't be stopped as I've tried chicken wire, fake snakes, pet hair, rattling cans on strings, and even loud yelling while in my boxers and the buggers just laugh at me as they think my garden is just for them. But, no creature dares eat my pepper plants so I stick with them.

Below is a couple pics I took from last year. I mainly grew Carribean Habanerros, Cayenne, and Thai. This year I've got the Naga Morrich and Red Savinas in addition for planting in ground very soon, right now they're still under my floresents and being pampered with care.

Last year was pretty rough as we had water drought mostly all year and I hate watering my garden with my city water that has so much chemicals in it like chlorine. This year I'm going to be catching as much rain water in a 55 gallon container from my sheds roof so hopefully my poor plants wont suffer as much :lol:
I'll be sure to take pics of this year gardens progression as well as I'm going to be experimenting with a couple different natural fertilizers to see which ones provide the best results.
 
What a lovely garden! I feel your pain over city water, and it's not just the chemicals, it's the cost!!

So, what fertilizers are you going to experiment with?
 
Just when you think you are doing a great job along comes someone who shows you how it's really done! Damn fine harvest fella!!!

Hehe, thanks Sick, I got 3 full tables of habaneros and 4 of cayennes last year, they just kept growing and growing. I'm still eating dried peppers and scaring my friends off when I cook with them :shocked:

So, what fertilizers are you going to experiment with?

Hello Pam! I'm glad you asked as I'd be interested in seeing if and what others are using. I already tilled in my normal small mixture of cow manure throughout the entire garden, but I'll be using 3 types of concentrated fertilizing for select plants for study. Alaska Fish emulsion, earthworm castings, bat guano, and Garden Tone.
I'm anxious to see how these result against each other.
 
A late welcome. Nice pics. What do you do with all your cayennes? I have trouble using up bulk cayennes for some reason so I end up drying most.
 
Thanks Potawie! I had so many freaking cayennes I didn't know what to do with them, I gave most of them away to people that enjoyed them :) It was actually my first year with the cayennes and honestly I won't be growing them again as they don't have any heat to them :P The only peppers I liked and kept were the caribbean habanerros, thai, and tabassco. I ate as many as I could fresh off the vine and dried the rest out in a food dehydrator. My wifey would get so angry as I was constantly drying peppers out in the kitchen overnight and the smell/spice made her eyes burn and she threatened to leave me many of nights :P

Garden Tone by Espoma?

I use the Tomato Tone by Espoma, and I think it does a great job. It's a complete organic fertilizer, but it's targeted at tomatoes and peppers. It's 4-7-10 while the Garden Tone is 4-6-6, correct? I'll look forward to hearing your opinion of its effectiveness. I can't get Tomato Tone around here since my favorite organic nursery closed, so I ordered it on-line.

Yup that's the product. I have a local garden center that has every known kind of fertilizer made and they have all the Espoma stuff. I was debating to try either the Tomato or Garden tone, but decided on the Garden as this is what my father used to use for all his veggies. I'll let you'll know what I come up with if I notice results different from one another product as this year is experimenting time for me, with new peppers and new fertilizers.

Hey Pepperfreak. It's nice to see another chilihead in the area! Great pictures and if you find yourself with too many habs or nagas this year I'm only a half hour away. Maybe you can tell me about some hotshops in H-burg. I know there is one at Strawberry Square but I haven't been there yet. Are there any more? I'm kindof new to this blog myself but welcome. JayT
