Quick question about vermiculite & perlite

Is it necessary to wash vermiculite & perlite before using it, or can I use it straight out of the bag?

thanks,
chibi

Please, please, put a vid up on Youtube.com of "The Washing Of The Vermiculite"! Sound messy and overly micro-managerial. Just mix it in and plant; open beer; repeat as often as necessary.

Geez, I just read the EPA.gov section on asbestos in vermiculite. Even though they say it barely registers on their testing equipment, how much asbestos is safe? Once it's there, it's there, yuck! Years of breathing airborne particles of all sorts and chemicals from construction/building sites has made me careful around the house nowadays. We use vermiculite, perlite, bat/seabird guano, different fertilizers for roses, azalea, aspaargus, weed'n'feed for the lawn, etc., so I try to keep as little from getting airborn as possible, use a mask when necessary. Now ONE MORE THING to worry about! Thanks for the heads up, though, good to know. 54(+) chiles and 28 tomatoes all in pots with vermiculite already-ugh!
