Supermarket score

Look at what I managed to score at Coles supermarket last week.

Orange Habs :woohoo: and they look like they are on Steroids!

I know to a lot of people you would find this normal, but over here in West Aussie land scoring these from Coles Supermarkets is nearly unheard of. All that we usually get over here is Cherry Peppers, Jalapeno, Birdseye etc so it is really good to see some Habs show up.

Hey Dazastar, you could say they are pretty hot. Have you eaten a Hab before? Definitely a lot less heat than a Naga, Bhut Etc and a bit milder than the Red and Chock Habs.

Hey Burning Colon, not too sure what ones you have got over your way but these have a real nice flavor and a nice delayed heat. Real Chinense smell too. Just not in the same ballpark as the Bhuts etc or even a Chock Hab though. I don’t know why but have always liked the flavor of the Orange Hab(oh no what have I started now!).

Great score! I have been combing the aisles of my local supermarkets as well, looking for seed donors. I usually just find jalapenos and tiny orange habs, but last week they had about six varieties (two mentioned above plus poblanos, anahiems, fresnos, and one or two others). Things are looking up!

Enjoy them Mike... :)

I should start searching myself, as it will only be supermarket peppers for me this season!!

Hey Rene, very nice to hear from you.

Yeah a bit of a bummer that you won't be growing much next season. Even with growing room I have to find Peppers in the Supermarkets, been another slow year for me. West Australia just had their hottest summer in 33years! Even had to put my Cactus under shade cloth!

Have a great spring my friend,

Micca

Hey which Coles were they at? Adam said he saw them at Gosnells once and he bought some home but they weren't there again. Perhaps they just get them in on the odd occasion or when they are low on others. Did they actually label them as habs or "orange chillies"?

From Forrest Lakes(Thornlie). They were tossed in with the normal ones but when they go through the checkout they come up Orange Habanero.
They don't carry them all the time and when they do Me and others tend to raid them :).
Theres a Lady at work that went in and brought all they had but she said they were pretty normal size, luckily for me I raided all the big ones from there the day before :hell:

i should have click on the picture to blow it up, they do look fresh.

locally, ours are brought in from mexico and we get 2 types of crops, 1 that is very orange with flavour, 1 that is light orange that has no flavour - that is what we are getting right now. of course, its still winter here and the product is imported by truck and in very cold storage by the time the produce hits our grocery shelves, i have to pick through every pod as many are shriveled and have blackened cores.

i bet you could make a nice powder

Thats interesting Burning Colon. I did think these looked a bit lighter orange but they seemed to go a deeper orange when I took them into work and didn't have them in the fridge.
Hate it when they have no flavour, specially if they look good.
Mmmm now a powder sounds good

Our grocery store orange habs usually look pretty sad here in Washington. One day I walked by and they looked fantastic and were huge. I bought a few dozen and made poppers (sorry...ABT) with them. They came out perfect and had just the right amount of heat considering I ate about a dozen in ten minutes. No pics, but it did happen. Haven't seen any good ones in the stores since.

I noticed that the Woolies I was in the other day had a few notices taped saying that due to the storms/floods in QLD, there would be iffy availability with chillies for the next month. Maybe Coles are dealing with that by selling whatever they can lay their hands on from their suppliers?

Might check the local Coles here later today, see what they have.

They must have been big to make Poppers. Bummer there hasn't been anymore good ones, it's so hard to get good Chilli.

I started to see them show up over here in Coles last year. It was only for a fairly short time and they were very normal size, not huge like these.
Maybe when the farmers crop comes in they sell it, then all the Chilliheads that know what they are come in and buy them all up :) (just a theory)
I think Austchilli might be the ones supplying the Orange Habs and all others to the supermarkets. I noticed they are in Qld? So not too sure where they are coming from now.

Yeah austchilli supply Coles and there is a company here that said they used to supply Woolworths with Habs but then someone tried sueing them because their kid grabbed one off the shelf and ate it and freaked out. Well that is stealing so serves him right  So then they decided it was too much of a risk to sell such a hot chilli.
There is also a few farmers in Carnarvon that supply Perth, so could be anyone.

What I have seen before is that half the time they keep them still in the box they came in, so if you have a look in the mirror above the fridge or pull the box out you can see where it comes from and what date it was delivered! A lot of the times the ones from Austchilli have been around 3 weeks old! No wonder the quality always looks shit.

I remember you telling me the story about woolies. I'm sure the kid didn't steal anything like that again!
Mmmm I will check the box next time i'm there, but they were thown in on top of the normal ones so not too sure.
Last time I passed through Carnarvon I did think to myself now that looks like an excellent place to grow Chilli

I found a heap next to woolies today at the cuisine grocer, does asian mostly but stocks mexican stuff too. very nice find though!!
I bought a couple hundred for like $20. Already put them to good use, I ate one. Love it.

And if I love them so much, I can only imagine how incredible they will be when I grow them next year. I think I'll grow the yellow ones, almost 100% sure on that :)

Off to see what I can find at the local, but if I can't find any, at least my (non-choc, non-white-bullet) habs are finally showing signs of colour.

I was starting to think I was growing a new Green Habanero variety for a while.
