Recovery Log

As some of you already know, on April 7 I injured my foot, which caused a lot of nerve damage, but no broken bones. The doc put me into an immobilization boot, which I wore for about a month and a half. Then I started walking. Generally, depending upon available time, I now walk 1 - 3 miles a day, sometimes twice a day. I still have some pain in my foot, but it is much better than it was following the injury. Mostly things like squatting down or turning the foot to the side cause pain, but just walking has been okay for the most part.

The doc gave me a program to follow when I was ready to start running again. When I saw it, I thought "LAME", but then, isn't that what one is with a foot injury? :) The program starts with one minute of running, followed by five minutes of walking. Yes, ONE MINUTE. Um.... er..... Okay, but that is a cycle. Went out for the first time tonight and went a mile. Ran for the requisite minute, walked the requisite five, repeated, ran a third time, then walked the rest of the way home. So far, so good. Yes, I'm feeling my foot more than I was before the run, which I was told in advance would probably happen. Okay, fine. I'm supposed to stick with the 1/5 minute routine until my foot no longer hurts after I'm done. Then I can go to a 2/4 routine, which will lead to a 3/3 routine, etc.

I can tell this isn't going to go as quickly as I'd like - patience is not a virtue I have in abundance when it comes to certain things, and recovery is one of them. Hence, this log. Perhaps if I have some fellow members watching my back side, I won't try to push too hard too soon, and it won't be quite so frustrating. I'm telling myself it's okay - NEXT year I can get back to doing road races. THIS year, focus on healing. Admittedly, right now my thoughts are on the bottle of ibuprofen.... or maybe a beer.

So if you'd either like to chime in with support, or have a recovery of your own you'd like some support in, I'd like to hear from you!

I am glad the recovery process is going well. Sounds like you need medical marijuana for that foot, make the pain more manageable. Havent seen you in chat in forever.

Thanks, Laz!

Yeah, the two classes I've been in over this summer have taken a LOT of my time up, so although I've been around a bit, haven't stayed long. Two weeks left in the semester though, so will probably start showing my face a little more often then! ;)

Recovery sucks but is slow so you don't re-injure yourself, as you know. Stick with it. My back injury last year(3 pinched nerves) took 3 weeks of no work and 6 weeks of chiropractor visits 3 times a week. Beat getting surgery in my book but took a while to walk like a sober man again. Hope the classes are going well too.

So far, so good. Have resisted the temptation to run longer than one minute at a time. Due to time constraints, I've been following my short path, which is just shy of 2 miles total. After leaving my house, I walk about half a mile to a street that used to be a creek bed, meaning I have to go down (and then later, up) a fairly short but steep block to get to the street I run and walk on. At any rate, I've been doing the requisite 1/5 routine since I last posted, though not every day (2x/week I have classes after work, and don't walk/run those days.) I have been running 3 times when I take this short path, and am limiting it to just one minute at a time.

This morning, however, I took the long path, which is on the same road, just a longer distance, about 4 miles. In the spirit of not over-doing it, I ran 4 times for one minute each (yes, with walking the 5 between), and then walked the rest of the way to the bottom of the hill. I ran up it, then walked the rest of the way home. POW! A small victory, but running up that hill felt SO GOOD!

and don't forget, when soaking your foot, epsom salts is not only good for pepper plants but is helps in the natural absortion of magnesium for the human body.

hope you get well soon and don't push things at least as far as the foot is concerned. there are always upper body exercises that help keep your core in shape. i have started to use those elastic bands, i find it easier on things like wrists but still can squeeze a peak contraction on body parts............don't go there!

i use elastic bands on my legs in this example.
just move the band up higher on the shin as to not stress the ankle but you are still working the core thigh muscles for support and strength. i train daily for my martial arts specialty and yep, there is no way i can perform like i did 20 years ago. wrist, ankles and elbows are always at risk and performing certain snapping motions....well, just don't do that...snap. ouch. then i too and gulping the ibuprofen. i was trained in the traditional japanese way, unfortuately, i think i missed the classes that said when over 40, one has to train like....this.

you are far smarter than me because like most guys, i just suck it up and suffer through the pain without seeing a doctor. then again, the last time i hurt my back(doing situps), my co-workers suggested that i see a doc, to see if there were any problems. went for x-rays, didn't get a call, so i called them, "if you didn't get a call then there is nothing wrong! what kind of pain killers do you want?". now i worried about the wasted exposure to x-rays that i didn't need!

good luck on you progress.

Yes, that "over 40" part kind of sneaks up on us - ick! Having just crossed 50, well...... I'm thinking it's probably better to follow doctor's orders at this point, as I used to just suck it up and push through, too. My how things change!

I initially didn't go see a doc, as I thought it just needed time to heal. But as things kept getting worse and worse as time progressed, rather than better, and got to a point I could hardly walk because of the pain, decided I'd better get it checked out. Admittedly, I about came out of my skin when he pushed HARD right where it hurt the most!

Frankly, the situation with your back sounds like either a bad doc or bad staff - since when do we hurt when nothing is wrong??? There are any number of things that won't show up in an X-ray, as any good doc knows - sometimes it's the experience of the doc that makes all the difference, as technology can only take us so far.

Thanks so much for your well-wishes!

Okay - curiosity got the better of me, and I Googled "pregnant Barbie." Recommendation? Don't go there - it's SCARY!
