My new pepper growing space for 2012

I've finally found a place that so far seems almost too good to be true. A 3br, 2ba, 2 story, 2 car garage, 1500sqft house that sits on 5.7 acres that was bult in 2005 that was never sold by the homebuilders, that was forclosed on is now two steps away from being mine. The property is two lots of which one is a 1 acre lot that was cleared at one point but has become overgrown over the years. That 1 acre lot is where I intend to grow not only peppers next year but also a myriad of other veggies, herbs and fruits. There is about 4 acres or so that is pine trees and other hardwoods. I'm not quite sure what I feel like doing with that just yet as that is years away. Perhaps it would be a good spot to raise catfish or tilapia amongst the shaded trees in big tanks. Who knows, it's just a thought. I'm having more trouble deciding what I want to grow next year than deciding to buy the house.

The house has sat for about 5-6 years, untouched and is surprisingly in good condition. Everything works, except for the broken pvc line coming from the pump. That is being taken care of by the forclosing bank. It will need a decent clean, bug bombs to kill the spiders, Ortho home defense around the outside, a scrubbing of the vinyl siding and that's about it really.

If you look closely, straight on in the picture you will notice a line of brown grass. That is the edge of the 1 acre lot that will become the farm.

Video walk through

yeah, I'll do some landscaping and irrigation. In fact, Horticulture is what I switched my degree to last semester.

I'm planning to build a formal English style garden on the front and a new deck and patio out back. My initial plan for the garden is to have it bricked all the way around similar to the plantations around the Charleston area. For the plants, I'm wanting to propagate some of the old plants from the plantation I gew up on and use those. I already have about 80 tea cuttings that I rooted in the propagation course at school. Those will be sent to the USDA research facility here in Charleston next week for a few months for some fungicide testing. When those come back to me they will be much older, better cared for than I could do and fungus free. I'll use Camelia, Azaleas, Tea Olive and not sure about the rest. I'd really like to have a Brugmansia plant in there as well. A section of the garden would be set aside for kitchen use.

A sprinkler system would go in as well which I would put in. I was speaking with the irrigation instructor yesterday about having a section dedicated for the school to use. Of course, he liked that idea.

ok just a thought the government will help and sometimes pay for you to put in a pond if its big enough and you want to stock it with fish

That, I did not know. Someone has already started to dig a pond, or maybe just a really big hole, in the wooded area. If they'll pay me to put a hole in the ground, I might just let them

WOW! So you get the house to start peppers in the winter?!?

Nice! I envy those with lots of space/land for gardens... city dwelling has its limits :(

that's true, but in some states, if the state wildlife people stock it for free, it has to be open to the public...you might want to check that..

How much does something like this run in your neck of the woods?

The place was originally listed for 200k, appraised by the county at just over 150k last year and I picked it up on forclosure at considerably less than both those numbers. Forgive me for not giving a more detailed number than that

Thank you for the kind words. I too am waiting to see what will come of the space. I think i'll be dedicating about an 1/8thac to peppers alone. Scorpion, paper lantern habs, white bullet habs, 7 pods, red bhut jolokia,, chocolate bhut jolokia, white bhut jolokia, naga morich, r. naky, jalapeno, cayenne, cowhorn, douglah, asian peppers that I don't know yet. I think I will grow mostly the paper lantern habs to use for sauce making.

For this fall id like to have onion, garlic, shallot, carrots and collards in the ground.

Getting closer now and it seems like wells fargo is finally getting around to doing their job and we should close on the 19th.

There is a nursery that is closing operations a few hours away that is selling off everything. It would be nice to have the house already so I could buy some of the stuff and have a place to put it.

Wow that's amazing. I hate reading these post because i'm so limited in my grow area which only allows me to grow about 12-15 plants in pots that sit on a fence.

I would definitely go with a pond. Not only can you use it to raise fish, but it would also act like a reservoir when you need to water your plants.

I had a chance to visit a pepper farm in Mexico several years back and they had several large ponds surrounding the pepper fields. The owner said half the ponds don't have fish because he uses them just for watering peppers and often runs them dry, but because he has so many he just moves on to the next pond. As a last resort he uses the fish ponds if needed, but those are primarily used to feed his family and extra income when he sells the fish.

Two weeks ago I closed on the property. Since then I've only been to the place just a few times. Today I began to clear out the 1 acre lot that will become the small farm/ oversized veggie garden. Unfortunately I was only able to do some redneck bush hogging for about 45 minutes before the altenator on the lawn mower experienced a short in it. Blame it on me because when I installed it, I left play in the wiring which allowed the flywheel to wear through it. That's a $60 self critiquing error.

Between my class and work schedule, I get Friday free to go to the house. There are still a few things to take care of before I start moving things in.

On to the video.

Awesome place, a bit lacking on kitchen counters but all the storage is a plus! You did good, that's the kind of space I wish we had. Happy growing!
