"Dangerous vegetables" in Supermarket

Here in Stuttgart is a big Store with a good food department. No,they play a "hot" game.

There are lying yellow and red habaneros, next to mini-bellpeppers.I am sure there were allready some "accidents" :)

yea that'd be funny someone bought the wrong ones by accident :)
the only HOT chiles we get in the stores in my area are orange habs, serranos, & jalapenos - which jalapenos are so over rated IMO & they're sold everywhere so I wouldnt want to grow them since I can just go buy them anywhere.

Here in Germany you get habaneros easyer than jalapenos. You get habs in almost every asian store or big groccerydepartments here.Jalapenos you must search for.But it beginns now that you get jalapenoplants in gardencenters in spring.

Thats like the local grocery store here has Habaneros tagged as MEDIUM Hot and cherry peppers tagged as extreme hot....I mentioned it to one of the clerks and all he said is oops...never did change the tags....

TB - why do I consider jalapenos overrated ? I just do, its my opinion everyone has their own opinion. I'll buy serranos before I ever think about buying jalapenos. I dont think jalapenos have a good flavor by themselves. serranos IMO have a much better flavor & more heat to them vs a jalapeno.
to each their own I guess.

I agree with chilihunter as well. I'm also not a big fan of the jalapeno. They aren't bad obviously. I honestly like habs alot better though. Not only are they hotter, but they have a heck of alot of a better flavor as well.
In the store I can readily get seranos, and jalapeno's all of the time, but the only habs that I can ever find are pickled. They are still good though. Not as good as the ones off of the plants though.;)

How often can you get *ripe* serranos and jalapeños in the stores? When they're green, of course they don't have much flavor, and of course the grocery store kind, like grocery store tomatoes, aren't going to have much flavor anyway.

I realize I am surrounded by uncivilized barbarians who, in their benighted ignorance, eat unripe peppers; but one can hardly comment on the taste when one savagely rips them from the bosom of the mother plant while still in their infancy.

I don't grow jalapeños much, not because I don't like them, but because whatever version of blight it is that infests these parts takes down most varieties of jalapeños rather quickly. Jalora is the only variety that does much for me.
