I feel stupid asking this but are two 50w bulbs equivalent to a 100w. All I know about physics says essentially yes. There may be some efficiency issues but, overall, they are equivalent.

However, I get the sense that two 50w bulbs won't have the penetration and intensity as you move further away from the bulb.

One little note. CFLs do create heat. When someone lies on an advertisement I lose interest. I just don't want to give money to people who do that
 
In power usage, yes, 2 50s equal one 100w. But for what we want you need to look at the lumen count. THAT is the number that matters, the bigger the better. The lumens are the amount of light that bulb puts out.

Sort of like HP in an engine. Cu inches mean nothing but bigger consumption. If I can make twice the HP with a smaller engine, I have better bang for the buck so to speak.
