Pro-mix bx price

Menards has the Pro-mix potting soil for $13.99 / four cubic ft bale - compressed.

So far my transplants LOVE it. Within one week they've doubled in size.

I got all excited and thought you were talking about BX or HP.

Edit: They have The All Purpose Growers Mix in the 2 cubic ft compressed bale for that price.

No Menards around here. That must be a clearance price or something. Even if it's not the HP or BX, that's an outstanding price for 4 cu.ft.

Nope - they just started stocking it. I thought it was an error, too. Picked up 4 bales, going back for more.

:fireball:

Two Bales were enough for ~12 five gallon smart pots.

Hmm Menard's here has been phasing out the 1 cu. ft. Pro-Mix organic and outdoor, hopefully they'll start caring the 3.8 cu ft bales soon instead. Probably won't happen but I can hope.

It's official - I'm an idiot. '2 cu ft - expands to 4 cu ft'

2 cubic ft bales for 13.99.

I'm still happy with the performance and price.

I'm not trying to steal the thread but I do have a question regarding the 3.8 cu ft compressed block of BX.

Do you need to presoak it? If yes what exactly does that mean? And what's the best way to do so? Tips? Thanks

Bud

I may be mistaken here, but I think most of the better mixes contain a surfactant, so pre-soaking isn't necessary. I was using some Sunshine #1 today... fluffed it up, put it in the pot along with a plant, and watered. It took the water readily without a lot of run-through.

Thanks cerebus, thought my Menards was trying to get one over on me.

As for presoaking Pro Mix BX it's pretty much up to you. The only advantage I've seen is it cuts down on the dust big time.

Pre-soak but not too much and mix and fluff it up for optimal root growth
Dry vermiculite is terrible for your lungs, and peat needs to be moistened and mixed or certain areas will remain dry or crust up.
Just try watering straight dry promix and you'll see a lot of the water is not absorbed, and the mix gets compressed(less fluffy)
Much easier to keep a well aerated/fluffy soil if its moistened and mixed, and then bottom watered

I put the smart pots (filled dry) into large tubs and then added warm water to the tub. Within a few hours the mix was moist enough for transplant, wicking up most of the water from the tub. For individual pots, I added the mix dry and placed the cups in a container of water, which was wicked up into the mix.

I can see that it would be a PITA to top water the mix dry as it is very fluffy.

After finishing off a dry bale of Sunshine #1 today, I think I agree on the value of presoaking. At the very least it will cut down on the dust. I didn't really notice any problems with water uptake of the dry mix, but that could be due to a difference in surfactants in the Sunshine vs. the Pro-Mix. The perlite tended to float to the top, which isn't particularly attractive. I do think presoaking should increase the volume of the mix for better economy. I got about 90 1-trade-gallon pots out of 1 dry 3.8 cu.ft. bale, which is about what one would expect from the Premier Tech calculator. Next bale I'm going to presoak and see if I can fill more pots.

BTW, from my vendor, the Sunshine #1 mix is $30.53/3.8 cu.ft. bale, basically the same as the BX.

Man i pay 38 here for it, but i switched over to roots organic 707 and i get 20 gallons for 25 bucks, and so far I like it the thickness compare to the fineness of the promix.
Plus the 707 has some coco and more perlite added to it.

Hey all. I was curious if the Biofungacide version or the regular version is the way to go. My plants will be going in the ground in a couple of months. Anyone have an opinion on this?

Ok guys I found this searching google . So Defiance OH store has the 2 cu ft bail ( 13.97 ) and ultimate organic. My question is has anyone had a problem with excessive die off of your seedlings with the later.?
