Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

Looks great, love those root pouches, have some brain strains in 10 gallon root pouches and the are growing like crazy. Purple bhuts are definately awesome, mine has been out for weeks but not sure when to eat them. Do they stay purple all the time?

Ok, now I'm wanting some pods to start producing. The nuce thing is I know what I have to look forward to next year when I have overwintered plants in the ground. Looking really good there!

They will turn red if you let them ripen fully. If you want to save seeds wait till they change.

Great update Melissa! I dunno how I missed it! Been really busy with the fam/work, and trying to keep up with my own grow. That one mystery plant looks as though it could be a purple cayenne???

Wow Melissa your variety and garden are AWESOME!! This is my first year growing super hots and I got a late start because I was having a hard time getting seeds, then a friend from FL. told me about this site and one other. Finally got a couple of seeds of a couple different varieties (trin scorp, fatalli, bhuts-regular,7 pot-not sure which type yet) and they are just sprouting. Seeings how I live in the las vegas desert, I was wondering do you or anyone know how the super hots handle 100+ heat? It's already 100 here this whole week, and I'm trying to figure out whether I'll be able to put any of them outside before september. Also where did you get all the different seeds? Trade, buy, other ? Not many varieties here in NV. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Root pouches are great huh? I have 4 more 10ga pouches, need to think of which plants I want to put in them! :) And as Shane said, the purple bhuts will turn red when ripe. Awesome looking plant, I love it!

So jealous. Looks great.

Thank you! :)

Thanks RM!! You will get some pods soon enough, overwintering is the way to go! I ALMOST can't wait for the season to be over so I can start another indoor crop! lol :P Hope all is well.

Shane I feel you, it's getting really hard to keep up online and outdoors! Always something to do outside, plenty of cool pictures to take and not enough time to do it. I still have so much potting up to do :banghead: One day soon it will be done....I hope. It's going to be a great season for all of us regardless :D
Good call on purple cayenne, it definitely looks like a cayenne type, the striping is black right now. Will be interesting to see what color they end up!

Nice looking plants what kind of fert you useing? I

Hi Smitty, thanks for stopping by my grow log. If you read from the beginning I explain everything I use, I make compost teas for my plants. I throw a little Dr Earth and other organic fertilizers from time to time in my potting soil mixes, Root Organics liquid nutrients in teas too. But for the most part I just wing it, and let the plants tell me what they need. :)

Hi there, thanks for the kind words! This is a great forum, a ton of great people who are willing to share their knowledge and love for peppers with anyone willing to learn. It's hard to believe I just started growing last August, it's hasn't been all fun and I hit a lot of bumps in the road! But, it is paying off when I see these beautiful plants grow up. I can't really comment on your climate but I remember reading someone's grow log that lived in Arizona, can't remember which one at the moment. Check the others out :) As for seeds, I started with a very generous SASBE offer on Garden web, and then a second offer on my hunt for the Bhut Jolokia my hubby wanted me to grow. Of course trading and other SASBE offers on here, it gets addicting! lol. I have spent a good amount on seeds this season too, mainly Pepperlover.com and Peppermania.com. Both excellent suppliers, many more out there if you check out the vendor vault. ;) Good luck with your grow!

That Black Scorpion tongue is the coolest plant I have ever seen! Great job with all the plants. Gotta be hard to keep up with.

It is a really cool plant, happy to have stumbled upon it! I plan to offer up seeds for a SASBE once I have some pods ready, keep checking back. :)

Melissa

My NOT Chocolate Hab! Set a couple pods, went on a growth spurt and dropped all its flowers, and now has elongated pods all over, and RED! lol. No idea what it is, the new pod shapes threw me off.

Hi Joe!

This is one of my oldest overwinters started back in August/September, so the seeds came from Smokemaster. I had it labeled as Chocolate Habanero. The pod shape is pretty consistent all over the plant now, it only set a few small pods a couple months back and now has pods set everywhere, with the new elongated shape.

hello again

ok either way

with chocolate habs there is always the probabilty that they will sometimes turn red, the reason all choco,s have the red gene, chocolate is actually a resesive trait

hope this helps thanks your friend Joe

Thanks Joe, I appreciate the info! :)

Here is the pod from Aji Joe supreme mix, pointing straight up and getting a little purple tint. Maybe I have another purple podded plant on my hands? :)

Mystery plant in the ground with some really cool striping, so far none of the pods have turned completely black.

Yellow manzano, with more of a rocotto elongated shape.

The Red manzanos emerge much rounder and fat

The mystery chinense pod out front is looking gnarly! :P

Great pics as usual. I bet its that worm tea! I think the purple tint on your first pod pics could be sunburn. Alot of my Aji Limon pods for some reason got sunburned and have purple on them like that.

Thanks PJ! :) Worm tea is the way to go! Definitely could be some sunburn, my cantina yellow pods get sun tanned even if not in direct sun. But this plant did start out with some purple tint to the foliage before being put in the ground, only time will tell. Thanks for always stopping in! :)

We need to wait and see on the purple one, however my guess would be purple peru lg fruit

either that or nmsu centenial rainbow, or firecracker pequin all three are in that mix so it could be any of them

thanks your friend Joe

Melissa, that black scorpion tongue plant looks unreal! Is it overwintered?

If I lived nearby I would steal that plant :D

Been cheking this blog regulary, great work and beautiful pics :)

Thanks so much MisterNo! That black scorpion tongue is an overwinter, started back in August. I have one in a 10ga, not setting nearly as many pods as that one in the ground! Amazing plant, I am definitely going to try cloning this later in the season. That bed it's in can get pretty water logged with rains in the winter, so I will probably not be able to overwinter this year unless I dig it out.

I appreciate you checking out the blog regularly, will try to keep you entertained throughout the season! :D

impressive grow and awesome pics keep it up and good luck with the farmers market.

Thanks wrightdaddy, still working on the farmers market. Next year I will make sure I sign up early so I get a spot. Hope all is well in AZ, that heat can be brutal huh? I use to go to Havasu all the time, always came back ridiculously dark and dehydrated from beer/sun combo! lol.
