seeds Seed Saving

I was thinking and decided to make my own seed packages for 2013 seeds...don't know why I haven't done this before...

take a picture of the pepper pod you are saving seed from, print it on plain typing/printer paper, fold in half, fold edges in by about 1/2" and tape closed...store in airtight container until seed planting time...

Very cool idea. May i suggest something?

You could go to a craft store and get small baggies 2 inches by 3 inches or 1 inch by 3 inch.
I get 100
1''x3'' bags for 2 bucks at my arts and crafts store.
And then o buy some small labels you print on and then just put the name or a small pic?
But whatever works for you it good! I like the idea but the taping and folding get time consuming especially after big trades or sales. Plus if it gets wet your seeds are screwed. i like plastic bags best!

Just my 2 cents! But have a good one!

if I were selling and shipping seeds I would do exactly that, but this is an easy way for me to keep my seeds straight at home...I suppose this is for the hobby gardener like I have returned to being...

I am a very careful with my seeds after I harvest them....how are they gonna get wet?....they are kept in the top of a dark closet in my computer room?....I don't think I have any leaks in the roof

True i understand what your saying but you never know. I like the phrase
"Better safe than sorry"

What if your going threw your seeds and you have kids over and they spill apple juice or whatever on it!!?!? lol

you never know! lol

Nice idea but you may want to include some info on there (ie. Name of Pepper - Year Grown - etc.) -- May seem unneeded right now but by planting time a couple years from now you may not remember what the name of that pepper was just by the PIC and will be posting so many more threads in the Pepper ID forum

Don't worry AJ he will get to know you after awhile.
Looks like a great idea. Think I will be doing that on a smaller level, maybe get 2 out of a sheet of printer paper. How big is that one you made??

i just smacked both of you

there better not be any kids over in my computer room...I am an old fart married to an old fartess and we have no kids at home and the kids and grandkids are in Chicago...we visit them most of the time and when they come, the computer room is locked...apple juice....come on, give me a break...maybe a shiner or two...

I will say good suggestions, but I think I can remember the name of my seeds based on the picture since I don't do the TSMB, or Butch T, or barracpore, or whatever names...I refuse to add names that were not what the seeds were originally...7 Pot,Trinidad Scorpion,etc...

they are just trying to help sic...no worries...

@ Just...yup...two packages per sheet would work fine...I suppose I am just wasting paper...

I agree!
Remember tho when we talked about genealogy? This all kinda reminded me after hearing all of these "named" pod,s of that conversation(genealogy),and a mix of The Jerry Springer/Maury/Daily momma drama TV shows........I've seen it all in this forum! LOL
Just plug in a pod name like so.....

TS DouglahTrinidadBonnettNagaButchobamacareisajokeThaiPrinceBrainpeterbhutjola7pot.........

YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER!!

I Find it all funny, yet interesting!

I put pepper name, source, and year on the baggie-----and a little piece of dried pepper the seed came out of inside.
Unless specifically stated, I assume all fresh peppers purchased to have a questionable pollinator. So "mystery peppers" are assumed from them.
I'm too lazy to print a pic, but the piece of pepper in the baggie is an excellent reminder at planting time.

This is pretty much what I do...

Although printing a small pic of what the pod looked like is a neat idea!

I like the picture idea! Its better then same old same old, Maybe I should do that for my hot sauces to hmmmm. I think AJ is on to something here

Yea the pic is probably enough to remind yourself but as another "old fart" you'd be surprised how quick the memory goes  -- Plus including the year is only needed if you keep them more than a single season but figure while the printer is printing it is easy enough to add that info.

I do something similar for my seeds but use the plastic pouches with an envelope label printed with half the label a pic and the other half has the Year and genetics of the plant (ie. for pumpkins and watermelons track the info on the mother and father plant used for germination)

I am sorting down the varieties I grow to less than 10...most of them superhots...I have 150 plants this year and will be under 100 next time...and like you say, the year would be added if I kept the seeds more than one year...if anyone gets seeds in a trade from me, they can rest assured they are this years seeds...

I like the idea of the pod picture. Funny, I was just thinking about something similar the other day. What about those blank mailing labels to stick on the outside of the bag? You could print up multiple at the same time (pod pic and name), one page, all different and then just peel and stick?
