Hi Pete,

It was good.. probably not as good as last year but the park in Fremantle last year was just a nicer place and much prettier IMO. Also it was meant to be a Chilli + Avocado festival but apart from the avocado trees being sold I didn't see anything else avocado related it was very much a chilli festival. Speaking of plants for sale they had an awesome range this year and plenty of each, most had fruit on them too which was nice. Unfortunately they were selling some unstable (Borg9) and relatively new crosses which I thought was a bit silly.

Overall it was good and I'll go back next year. One thing I really liked this year is that a lot of the vendors had great experience and knowledge of many chilli varieties and this was showing in the products.

Can't believe people went to the wrong place.. seriously lol

Good to catch up with you Jase.
It was good to see Araluen picked up their game and came to the party with a decent supply of good plants. Last year was absolute shite!
Being the sole supplier of plants now you would expect nothing less. Like you say they should be at least putting a warning on the unstable crosses or better still stabilizing them before flogging them off to the public. They are Botanists so they should know better.
You picked the right day to come down too Mate. They got slammed by that storm today and they ended up closing the event around 3pm.
Just the time I was arriving to do the rounds and buy the usual truckload of goodies. Oh well had more money for Beers so all good

At least with the new venue the parking was close and free  :P  . Araluen botanic park has always been the best venue but sometimes you just have to move on and find a new home.
the worst thing with the fest is that it doesnt get advertised enough. Last couple years have been better but I assume because the money from the fest goes towards the upkeep of Araluen Botanical park the advertising costs are kept at a minimal. Specially when there is a venue change it should be plastered all around the place.

I was there Saturday. Thought it was pretty good... I just wish they would have sorted the stalls into categories instead of dotting them around in a mess. but yeah I picked up a few trees, Aji Pineapple, Habanero and a Choc Fatali. Also got some of that sauce you recommended Jase.

But all in all it wasn't too bad, but it was my first so I have nothing to compare it to.

Got a picture of the backup chillies the had though.

Great to see you made it down Mate. Its always a great day and good to support homegrown locally made products.
Ive been going along ever since the festival started way back those 15 odd years ago in the days when it was held at Araluen in Febuary. ive only missed one year which was the first year they held it. And back then Just eating hot Chilli in febuary was a challenge on its own!

I am assuming why they dont group the stalls into categories is so when you are going around doing tastings you get to break it up a bit. Imagine all the hot sauce companies hanging out in one corner. You would walk up to the first one try the mild then work up to their hot ones then go next door to the next hot sauce company with you tongue hanging out and your head exploding but still expected to taste whatever was in that mild sauce they were offering. Most of the time you will have like hot sauce then a brewery or cider then maybe some confectionery or food then another hot sauce etc etc

Mate that sauce I recommended used to be amazing but when I tasted it at the Chilli festival this time round I nearly threw up! Don't know wtf they did to it but I used to love it now it's like really chemically taste.. I ended up getting some Dr Paul's smokey Hab as well as the Dingo hot sauce. ALL of the Gringos stuff was great but I don't like the big open top bottles, besides I was nearly out of cash lol

Micca was great to catch up and have a chat. Those chillies you gave me are quite nice, not too strong or floral but very usable. Do you know what they are called? Btw I was waiting you to react after eating a chunk of that pink 7pot but nothing! Lol was pretty impressive either it had no heat or your tolerance is pretty high.

Na Mate I did a homer and drank some candle wax before haha. Nah not really I have actually been out of touch a bit lately as i havent had fresh Chilli for a while. After my Mum passed away I wasnt up for looking after my overwintering plants and didnt start seeds till late so mine are only just starting to flower now.
Trying to get my tolerance back up though just in the middle of making some vindaloo to do just that!
The Chilli I gave you is from Brazil and is called CGN21566. From the CGN seedbank.

With Phils sauces they have to have a wide mouth or otherwise alot would not come out of the bottle. Alot are pretty thick sauces.
I used to have the vinigar based and pepper mash based like tabasco when I was younger but over the years I have found the vinigar to be too strong and sauces too runny.
Love tomatoe based and Mango based sauces :-) . Saying that Dingo hot sauce does do a killer Mash :-)

Hi Micca,
Sorry to hear about your Mum.

Dont worry once things settle a bit you will get the growing urge again. Its in your blood.

Have you heard of the"gourmet jigsaw' chilli? I know there are many new ones each year but this one looks scary.

Thanks for the kind words Mate.
It has been a hard road but I am keeping positive and trying to move forward.
I am getting back into it but having a late start means my plants are still a bit small but some are starting to flower so should hopefully get some fruit set.
I'll overwinter this season and will give me a jump on next season.

Also the Jigsaw is pretty scary looking. I did grow a couple plants last season but did not get any fruit.
It is Fatalii's (Jukka) creation and a great looking hybrid Chilli

Sorry to hear about your mum mate.

I will definitely look up that thilli I thought it tasted nice. Would love to do a cross with Tabasco (Tabasco x chinense's are my favourite by far) but don't have the room to grow it out.

My sauce should be quite different to the average fermented sauce.. :)

I think this season has been awesome for growing, nice an warmbut not too hot. Been picking heaps lately I will end up with a few kg's off around 30 plants. Personally I think rain helps, you can water all you like but as soon as it rains everything seems to go nuts!

Hi All,
Finally made some chilli sauce out of some nice Brazilian Bhut Jolikia`s.Its so freaken hot.

I found some of those tomato potato gnats that have infiltrated the metro area.I mixed some chilli oil and garlic with a touch of

Pyrethrum.Hope that works

Cheers

Hey guys,

So I'm getting the seed train over here from the east.

But I need a few more people to show interest... anyone want to join in?
Will most likely be over here during winter
