PjPEPPERS Bonsai indoor/outdoor glog

Well folks...here goes!

Our 2013 indoor grow is the first step for freedom for us. We are planning on using this years seed stocks for next years grow which will then be harvested resale puposes to help put us on the property ladder. It's not a get rich quick plan but more of a plan we believe in and are prepared to see it through to the end. We hope you can join us on this adventure and offer any advice where you can. We are all ears!

(I will include as many pictures as possibe that are relevant to the grow and a few that are in for giggles also) I love looking at pepper-porn of other peoples grow's, it is an excellent research method, so hopefully our pic's will inspire and help you all to get a better understanding of what we are doing.

If you see something we are doing wrong please shout out!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plan of action
By having a 100% indoor grow season we will be able to control the enviroment in which our peppers are culivated in and with lots of hard work, cunning and lady luck..ooh and your advice!, we believe we will be able to grow stable, popular, tasty, hot, beautiful peppers to use for seed in the 2014 mega grow we ar planning.

Equipment
Seed soaking cups for an overnight saltpeter bath
BioBizz light mix organic seedling soil
At least 2 x agralan plug plant trainers
1 x growcube propagation tent (90cm long x 60cm wide x 60 cm tall)
1 x Lightwave T5 4 bulb grow light (24w per bulb, 96w total, 6,600 lumens blue)
1 x Petnap speedy seeder heat mat (49cm x 49cm - 40w)
Both sets of fingers crossed!

If seeds/we are successful, once grown enough, the next step we will be using the following:

1 x self built nursery grow cabinet made from the spare wardrobe (see pics of flat)
1 x Lightwave T5 8bulb grow light (54w per bulb, 432w total, 33200 lumens super blue)
8 x 7cm square black plant pot tray sets - these hold 28 pots in each tray

(Pot measurements are - External = 72x72x71mm (with lip), Internal = 66x66mm (Top), Internal = 49x49mm (Bottom)Tray measurements are - External = 562x315x50mm (with lip), Internal = 552x305mm, Internal = 58x58x50mm (compartments) Volume - 0.2 litres (per pot))

Once plants are big enough they will be going in to the main crop tents, we will have 3 tents in total.

1 x 2.8m long x 1.4m wide x 2m tall.

2 x 65cm wide x 165cm long x 180cm tall.

The largest tent is where we will be growing the widest selection of plants. Our aim is to try and grow approx 195 dwarf or short plants in this tent. Then the 2 smaller tents will have approx 20 - 40 larger super hot's in them.

We have designed a self built plant pot system using heavy duty rubble sacks, bamboo, plastic storage boxes, wire tyes, florist wire and fishing line. A lots of praying!!

The pots we have designed are going to be 10cm squarred at the top, going down 80cm in lenght to a 1 litre approx 9cm round plant pot attached and sealed by tyes. The shape of the pot/sack will be held in a cylindrical shape by the fishing line wrapped around it and the florist wire is used to keep the shape of the top of the pot whilst keeping it open. The bamboo canes will be used the create a cross hatch grid effect frame where each pot rests/hangs in.

The pots will be in grids of 15 and will sit in the plastic storage trays/boxes
The purpose of the round flower pot attached to the bottom is to allow the storage boxes to be flooded when watered and to leave enough flow space around each pot base for the water to be siphoned up by the roots and soil. Hard to explain and pictures will show better, but I think and hope it will work. Will have to try to see! The pots have been designed like this to maximise the space of the tent and allow loads of room for downward root growth. The pots will hold 9 litres of soil this way! Hope that is going to be enough be plant?

We will be using 3 x Lightwave T5 8bulb grow light (54w per bulb, 1296w total, combo of red and blue bulbs) to light up this tent. These light are only 60mm in height and have been choosen to leave max space for the plant to grow from the top of the pot to approx 12 inches away from the light. The tent is 200cm in height, the pots and tray total 92cm in height, minus 6cm for the light, minus 30cm light space means approx 70cm for plant growth. We will be training plants will a huge grid wall we have already. The main tent will look like a SCRog grow.

Not 100% sure on what fan we are using yet but will be a 5inch fan located in the top right pulling air from a passive vent flap on the bottom side of the tent.

That's enough for now I think, plus fingers hurt from typing. Here's a few pic's to see where everything is going. We have a separate studio apartment that we use for our online business which has kitchen bathroom and large open space so this will be taken over by our pepper grow soon.

Please feel free to offer any advice as it is much needed. I will post up some more pics and our list of seeds we are growing tomorrow for you all to view.

Thanks

(excuse the mess - been playing around with the selving to make space)

Peter, I really like the way you are approaching your new business. You certainly seem to have your plan together, the one thing to add to your plan is some sort of pest control. It is always better to have some on hand and not need it, than to need it and not have it on hand.

Looking forward into seeing your grow list.

[sup]Sounds like you have it all planned out. Good luck to you and I look forward to lots of pepper porn.[/sup]

Thanks for stopping by. Yeah trying to plan it out as much as possible and share the way we are doing it. If we start off right hopefully we will finish that way. Trying not to cut any corners :surprised:

Been busy snapping away so will get some more pics up soon

Thanks Brian, hopefully by documenting as much as we can it be let people see what we are doing and allow them to offer any advice they think will be helpful to our grow etc.

Have been looking at pest control for sure. We want to stay with organic or natural means of control so still doing research but will be purchasing before the seeds going in to soil. Any recommendations?

If you are looking to generate seed stock for next year as your say, how will you avoid any cross pollination, especially in the largest tent where you say the widest selection of plants will be housed? Prosperous luck to you in your 2013 grow!

Thanks for stopping by. It is something we have looked into with great detail now and think we have the best possible solution or situtation will allow. The aim is to isolate each set of plants with a hanging ultra fine canopy cage. My wife is a pretty smart on the sewing box, so she is going to be stiching together some home made isolation cages out of this ultra fine spun polyester sheeting we have. The sheets are similar to a winter cloth you would use outside to cover the cabbages and the holes measure like 0.22mm by 0.38mm so it's really really fine cloth. We hope this and by not using a fan inside will help prevant cross pollination.

Pretty hard to explain what I mean, once they are ready I will throw up some photos of the finished canopy's and you can give us your verdict if we should use them.

Thanks :P
Woah. That's great planning man! Good luck!

Thanks, we are trying our best to be precise. Shout out if you see anything we are doing wrong wouldn't ya. thanks

There are lots of great organic pest control methods posted around the forum. My favorite is Azamax, its expensive but works really well on most pests. Do some checking around, you will find more information that you could possibly ever need.

The great thing about grow tents is that it is difficult for pests to get in unless you bring them in, so keep it clean and you shouldn't have too many issues.

The awful thing about grow tents is that when pests do get in, they are really difficult to get under control.

Just a slice of the seeds we have in at the moment. If any "butter ya muffin" let me know and I'll send some your way. All our seeds are from our personal grow last year or from friends. All seeds are stored in a plastic container in the bottom of the fridge so are good to go.

We think we are going to be using a few of these varieties for this years grow but have not made up minds yet. Would be good to go with something completely different that we have not already got.

Yeah will certainly have a look in the forum for some ideas. All our plants are going to be isolated with ultra fine cages so should keep away the beasties but will certainly not be leaving it to just that. I think overkill is better where pests are concerned and as we are putting in a fair bit of time, effort and cash it is something that we can't leave to chance.

I'm quite ocd when it comes to projects so the tent will be spotless :P

Will have a look at the Azamax now, thanks

The wife suggested growing some ornamentals today on the living room window sill...didn't want to say no, so this is what is gowing into the soil tonight:

DSCN0583.JPG

Numex centennial
Numex twilight
Little elf
Poinsettia
Royal black
Filus Blue
Variegata

Should have some nice colours come up now - will post pics as and when they do.

We think we have narrowed down our list for the main grow now. Well atleast one of the smaller tents anyway. This is whats going in one of the smaller tents:

Bhut Jolokia red
Mem Jolokia
Moruga Scorpion
Chocolate Naga
Naga morich - similar to dorest naga
7 pot yellow

These are going in the soil tonight so wish them luck ;)

Still gathering seeds for the main tent - I think it will be mainly thai stlye plants or similar small growing varieties - will update when the final grow list has been decided.

Thanks

Just a little update if anyone is interested!

Managed to get the main tent up now and cleared some space out for the other bits. Aquired a table from a new boat shop that is just opening up around the corner, they had it outside with a free to go home sign on so picked that up striaght away and that is now our inspection station for when we need to bring plants out of the tents.

You will see from the pics that the warddrobe is now on it's side with a few alterations, this is where the plants will go after there first pot on. We are starting all plants in the propagation tent that is under the inspeaction table, then once they are big enough for the first pot on they will go in the wardrobe and then into their specific tents.

The wardrobe is on it's side so one of the smaller tents will be going on top of it.

Also making a pepper sorting table which is shown in the pic too.

Will be updating with our final grow list soon, I promise. Just had to order so more salt peter first as the other stuff didn't look at it's best so want to start off right.

Thanks

Thanks, it's a challenging space we have got so we're trying to get the most out of it. It's starting to come together now though, just looking forward to seeing some foliage and fruits in there :P

That's a serious grow-op!
I would look for HPS/MH lights for the big tents, with such heights and big plants you will probably need more light penetration at some point.

Good luck

I know I kinda think the same now the tent is up. Sometimes you need to have it in front of you to see it, all the planning is great but sometimes it's clearer when it's right in front of you.

Still waying it up though becasue if we don't go with the cfl's we will loose head height/plant grow space and movability. The cfl's are a inexpensive alternative on outlay and running cost but obviously not as powerfully as hps so not made a final decision just yet.

Thanks for stopping by, will have some more pics up tomorrow hopefully for people to have a look at.

Cheers Datil

Quick update today for anyone/if following.

Managed to get a little more done today. The 2nd tent is up and I think we are just going to stick with 2 tents now as we still need to keep some room for the bed in there for when family visit. The tent was slightly wider than the cupboard (which I knew so no surprise) so made a quick plinth for the edge of the tent to sit on.

Got one of the t5's up in the propagation tent but might change it out for a 125w cfl with a reflector and move the t5 over to the cupboard with another that we have brought (just waiting for it to arrive)

Finally managed to get some seeds soaking in some saltpeter. We have the wife's ornamental's (or what she looks the like of anyway!)and some super hots that are going in the 2nd tent.

The ornamental's (sort of) are:
Variegate - 3
Numex Twilight - 3
Poinsettia - 2
Royal Black - 2
Numex Centennial - 4
Little Efl - 3
Filus Blue - 3
Thai culinary - 2
Pequin - 3
Tabasco - 3

The super hot's for the 2nd tent are:
Khorika jolokia - 2
Bhut jolokia chocolate - 2
Phiringi jolokia - 2
Mem jolokia - 2
Krishna jolokia - 2
Naga morich - 2
7 pot yellow - 2
Chocolate naga - 2
Moruga scorpion - 2
Jalapeno purple - 2
Jamaican yellow - 2
Habenero white - 2

So wish them all luck in there 24hr soak.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing some green in there now though. If we can acheive anything like your last harvest then we will be over the moon. Beautiful colourfull pepper mountains! :P

For the space you have and the investment so far, if you are in a legal state, there are crops that might produce more income.

There comes a time when expected income is unbalanced to existing cash outflow. Keep that in mind.

Growing weed is illegal in the uk and I much prefer sharing my bed with my wife compared to spooning up with some dude in a 6x6.

We have much bigger plans for next year, this is just to get us going off the mark. We are lucky enough to have some land which is being prepared this year for a massive grow next year.

There are loads of people growing weed in the uk but loads of people get busted so it's not worth even trying to make money from it. We stay 100% legal and sleep well at night.

Plus I have a young family and trying to bring them up the correct way, we have just moved away from an area that had a lot of drug activity to place where we are now 100feet away from the ocean so I wouldn't even think about doing anything like that.
