AACT's brother: FPE (Fermented Plant Extracts)

luckily, AACT is already an established fact here in THP forum ...
 
I would like to expand this openess to Fermented Plant Extracts (FPE's).
 
 
Here is a very basic primer on the topic (sorry for some kindergarden-talk (and resulting inprecissions) - but I really want that people understand what is done and why).
 
What is the idea behind FPEs?
 
Well you have certain plants that have certain characteristics or ideosyncracies:
- some are rather bug resistent (e.g. cilantro/corriander, peppermint),
- some grow awfully fast (stinging nettles, tomatoes, seaweed),
- some plants are known to be high in "K" (banana, comfey) ...etc...
 
So now you just take a plant with known benefit/characteristics (e.g. the growth hormones, enzymes and 70+ micro-nutrients in kelp) and kind of "destil" this trait into an extract you can use for watering your plants.
 
 
Cool ... how is this done?
 
Just put your "donor-plant" into some water and let it sit ... most of the good stuff will leach out
 
 
Is it really that simple?
 
no... :D
 
 
Why fermenting?
 
Ok, fermenting stuff, is like pre-digesting stuff thats hard to digest. Hard to digest whole milk is fermented into yoghurt, gassy cabbage into Sauerkraut, etc... 
 
Basically, fermenting breaks down long molecules in shorter ones that are easier digested/absorbed by plants or persons.
 
Easiest way to ferment is using lactobacillii (whey, kefir, sauerkraut-juice, kim-chi-juice, sourdough-hootch, you get the idea ... and to feed the lactobacillus, you need molasses (but you already got those from your AACT adventures :-))
 
Fermenting also lowers the ph, which makes for a "shelf-stable" liquid fertilizer (mayor benefit over AACT). Also, fermenting actually can create goodies (e.g. Sauerkraut does have more vitamins than raw cabbage) other goodies are the whole probiotic bacteria.
 
 
So, how about a basic recipe?
 
45% donor plant (nettle, kelp, etc...)
45% good water
5% molasses
5% lactobacteria
 
shred up donor plant in blender (speeds up the process) and mix with the other ingredients. Depending temps, etc... let sit in plastic container (with slightly cracked lid) for 1-3 weeks, until fermentation stops. Dont worry that its anaerobic - thats not a bad thing.
 
You now should have a rather low ph (below ph 4) extract. Dillute 1 part of this extract into 20 parts of good water to water plants or 50+ parts for foliar feed.
 
apply like AACT.

soooooo. if i read this correctly, your saying anaerobic composting with select materials. i can see it, although i'm not convinced about a genetic trait such as vigorous growth being introduce thru a compost tea. i can understand the rest about nutrients and peppermint/cilantro extract deterring pests.

of course you do not introduce genetics ... what you introduce (in this particular case) is: Auxins, Cytokinins, Gibberellins and other growth hormones. You get those "floating" around in the plant, particularly (again: in this particular case) in the new shoots (the new grow) of the plant.
 
Excursion:
Auxins are mostly found in the new growth of the plant which lies in SHADOW. It makes this portion of the plant grow faster than the rest - thus INCLINING itself towards the sun (as the shadow side of the stem gets longer faster :-) . For this very reason, you should harvest shoots in early morning - if you strive for max. Auxin content.
 
Just for a moment, think about the Auxin carroussel in a Sunflower ... :D
 
 
Those are the same substances you find in commercial products like Clon-Ex, etc...
 
Just to be clear: the whole FPE are widely commercial available - just have a look at your typical grow-shop - about 50% of all your snakeoil-wonder-juices are FPEs with marketing mumbo-jumbo... I am talking about those $50 / liter liquids.

I grew up in central Europe - where nettle extract (Brennessel-Jauche) has been used for 100s of years ... and its basically just a FPE ... (except that in case of nettles you get away with just water and nettles, as they are very high in carb's, and dont need molasses or lactobac. to ferment).
 
But be warned - the nettle extract smells like $h!t squared.... but it is one of the best growth extracts available for any plant.
 
Same is true for kelp extract ...kelp grows at a rate of 1ft per day ... so its full of growth hormones ... but very low in N ... again, "distill" it and you get out of it what you want/need.
 
 
The canna folks use nettle in growth and dandelion extract in flower ... ROUGHLY the same can be applied to peppers, where you first want growth and then later on take care that you get good budding or avoiding flower drop by pushing K with the dandelion extract.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I make lots of comfrey/thistle tea with wild harvested plants from invasive populations but never thought to ferment them for longer storage, it'd be a great way to save them for use over the winter though.

(anecdotical case study)

A 1:1 mix of finely chopped camellia flowers were combined with rainwater (ph ~6.5) and left for 2 weeks. Two somewhat sickly azaleas were chosen as the test subjects -- both have been in identical soil for more years than I can remember and are of the same height and density as well as the same colour flowers. They are planted 1m from each other and receive the same amount of light and rain. From my observations in the past these two plants perform the same as each other each season. Good test subjects I hope.

One plant was fertilised (heavy soil drenching + light foliar) with a 1:20 mix of FPE:rain water twice over two weeks. Not only does it have substantially more flower buds than the control plant (easily triple the number), but they are also much more developed. Unfortunately I'm out of town for a week as of today, so I can't provide any pics until I get back. It's Bucket Science at best, but I'm happy enough with this test to decide that I'll be using fermented flowers as a fertiliser in the future.

Just to keep this thread flowing ....
 
I started a Bull-Kelp FPE today ...
 
got some dried Kelp, rinsed it, and nearly burned up my blender milling it :D ... 
 
then a dose of molasses, my Lactos and a lot o water ...

Keep the examples coming. 

I essentially do combinations of this and aact. You can achieve the same type of outcomes via composting with the same material as well. Then just use the compost as the bulk of your soil makeup :) Great stuff. Keep it coming.

good thing if you use lactobacteria in the mix - it tones down any "loud" smells :D

I assume you could use whey from yogurt to innoculate lactobacteria like any typical vegetable ferment.  I've never tried it myself, but I do a lot of fermenting to preserve veges and the only difference really would be adding a sugar source to ensure the bacteria/yeast don't starve.
