overwintering DIY Over-wintering Pots For Those With Limited Space!

Ok, so I've read up on over-wintering and have decided to give'r a go in the hopes of some massive bushes next season.

Unfortunatley, like most I suspect, I have very little room indoors to house my future behemoths. Sucks, right?

But wait, through my lurking, I've discovered how awesome the bag pots are, you know the ones that air-trim the roots and such (I forget what exactly they're called). I also saw that they're pretty much the same as the grocery store bags and some growers use bags from walmart etc.

This got me thinking. Those bags are probably pretty easy to work with. So I bought 3 from the local No Frills (our Canadian cheapo grocer), and this is what I came up with:

1. First, I snipped about 4 1/2" off each side leaving two pieces like this

2. Then I found and used a thread remover thing to get rid of the handles while maintaining the integrity of the fabric (was lucky to find this, made my life so much easier)

3. I opened up the cut-out and snipped through the middle of the base so it could be folded together

4. Pinned that sucker up

5. I found a kind heart to sew those bad boys together because I knew I'd screw it up if I tried

6. Repeat as needed! I made 6 out of 3 bags which cost a total of $3. Not bad!

7. One side had no crease so I ironed it to square it up.

MY THOUGHTS:

The pots are about 4"x4" and (I'm guessing) about 14" tall. I think this will work well for the winter in theory because it will set up all the roots in the right direction for the spring for a deep re-potting. Hopefully, because of the fabric air-trimming the roots, they'll be ready to blast straight out in the spring.

I will up pics of my transfers, as well as before and (fingers crossed) after shots of the roots.

Hopefully one day this will help others in my space predicament.
