The Yaki Blue

A huge thank you goes out to Standbyandfire for sending me this amazing pod. Thanks Steven.

The Yaki Blue is a cross between the Filius blue (C.annuum) and the Bhut Jolokia. I guess that means it`s got C.annuum, C.frutescens and C.chinense genes in it.

The plant`s stems seem to be purple and the pods when unripe are also a blueish-purple. They appear to take a very very long time to ripen to a mottled red and burgundy colour. The initial aroma is very definitely a quite strong Bhut-like aroma, which isn`t too surprising given how strongly Bhuts smell.

The flavor is also very like a Bhut, initially, with very little sweetness, but a touch of acidity and slight fruitiness. That then fades into the background and a very good C.annuum-like flavor comes to the forefront. The heat comes on quickly and I thought had 2 phases; one being a front of the mouth annuum-like burn which was spiky and stingy, with the back of my tongue and throat burning much more like a C.chinense. That could be just my expectations given the cross, but I don`t think so. The heat was quite impressive. Maybe double that of a habanero, but probably a little more than that.

Awesome variety!!!

I tried some Yaki Blues a friend sent me and I agree they are about double habanero hot. The ones I had tasted very bhut its a nice pepper.

I dont know about a good vendor, but my plant last year was awesome , probably my favorite plant. Went to over winter the plant but my dog ate it !!! Kept seeds though and have 2-4 plants growing this year..  I haven't seen anyone with pods quiet like mine and my foliage was a real dark with green highlights,  with a metallic shine that made it look blue ...
