The Pescetarian

Hey y'all,

Not too long ago I had an epiphany. Except for a craving for a cheeseburger now and then I really don't eat meat. It's not that I don't like the taste of bacon, pork chops, chicken, brisket, et.al. I do, but I find myself eating a more healthy balanced diet of veggie's and seafood.

Dig it.

I reckon it really started for me a few years ago. Went to the doctor for a checkup and it was revealed my blood pressure was too high, my cholesterol was too high, and I was carrying around way too much weight for my size. The witchdoctor was only interested in pedaling his drugs to me and engaging me for repeated and often visits to the waiting room. Screw that.

I then made the decision to lose the weight and at the same time get my cholesterol in line along with lowering my blood pressure without spending the rest of my life on drugs. How did I do it?

Easy. I quit eating the stuff that I really didn't need. I cut out the sugar, lowered the amount of salt I used, quit eating eggs, bacon, deep fried foods, meats of all kind, anything in a box or a can, and all processed food crap. My cholesterol and blood pressure dropped like a rock and the weight fell right off. It was enlightening to say the least and I did it without having to take a bunch of damn drugs.

The other day I made a bunch of meatballs for the Sandwich of the Month Thread. After I made the meatball sammich I asked myself why I did that. I don't know. I don't crave meat. I didn't even think it tasted all that good. I mean it did taste good but it wasn't anything I'd go out of my way to eat again. So why bother anymore?

So it got me thinkin' about what I eat most on an everyday basis. I love tacos but it occurred to me that I mostly load my tortillas up with onions, garlic, chiles, shrimp or fish, or just whatever veg I have laying around. Cabbage? You bet. Goes great on a taco. Why not?  These days I also find myself looking at labels. Yellow dye #5? Get outta' town. Why is that sheeit even necessary?

So this thread is going to be dedicated to all 'thangs more or less healthy. A pescetarian lifestyle if you will, because that is what I am.

Y'all got some hippy healthy food stuff to posty up? Well this is the place to do it. Quinoa? Whole wheat bread? Sprouts? Bring it all. But bring the heat too!

Here ya' go....

Texas Gulf Brown shrimps are in season. 16/25's.

Made up some coleslaw with shredded cabbage, cilantro, chopped chile's (look like thai's but who knows), just a little sea salt, olive oil based mayo and Mae Ploy sweet chile sauce.

I picked up a little Lodge cast iron griddle that fits perfectly on my Lodge Hibachi grill. Why? Because I like fire! But I don't really care for all the spooky stuff emitted from wood fire or charcoal.
The griddle 'thang just works and its just dang cute too.

A little squirt of canola oil was all that was needed.

Just look at 'em! Juicy, sweet, and tender shrimps. (Note the just made hot sauce, that's for another thread)

I will say that I've always had an addiction to cheese and I find it difficult to not put it on taco's. So we got a corn tortilla with a little shredded cheddar, the coleslaw, and the shrimps. Before eating I splooged the just made mango hab sauce all over it.

Have mercy!

This is what I crave.

I eat like that so I can look like and do this.

So all you seafood and veggie lovers, posty up whatchoo' got. Bring on all your healthy hippy food pornz.

I gotz to post these.

I'm in love with this little griddle.

And for no dang reason, a shot of the taco with mango/hab sauce.

Healthy food never tasted so good!

Damn that taco looks good. I could really get into that.

Now, if only chicken and turkey could be considered seafood, I could probably give perscetarianism a try since I very rarely eat red meat. I don't think I could live without my chicken wings and Thanksgiving would never be the same with salmon instead of the turkey.

My body has been telling me for years to stop the abuse.  My brain however says "shut up and eat the sugar coated deep fried bacon and cheese thang"
If my brain doesn't listen then eventually it won't have a body to tell what to do.

Tis hard for most people to get started unless there is a rude shock to their way of life.

Thanks TB, this might just be the thread I need.

DTS, a good way to get started is to leave yourself a little bit of room to cheat. My "cheat" would be cheezeburger and I allow myself one every other month.

For me it might have been easier as most of the foods I ate back when, I still eat now. I've merely changed how I prepare them. I've always eaten lots of fish but nowadays I don't deep fry it. I used to fry jalapeno poppers, now I bake them. I used to buy bread. Now I just make it myself. About once a week I make my own tortilla's too when I want flour torts, but I've figured out how to make whole wheat tort's that don't taste like cardboard. I start every 'thang off with my "trinity", chile, garlic, and onions. I take that and add it to say a couple diced red potato's done in CI and olive earl, and finish it off with a little cheese melted on the top. A little homemade ketchup to go with it and that's supper.

After a while you don't miss the fatty bad stuff like bacon but in moderation there ain't nothing wrong with continuing to eat it. I simply choose not to.

Ok, I see you are trying to suck me in to this with shrimp and Mae Ploy, two of my biggest weaknesses.  I may have a contribution to this thread.  I am pretty sure my salmon meal the other night would qualify, so I really do eat healthy once in a while.

Your Jedi mind tricks won't work on me. this thread is nothing more than eHarmony.calm where vegans, vegetarians, and fish/crustacean eaters will come together and talk about how dirty us carnivores are. Now post up some Soy queso, with a kelp and Krab wrap and get it over with. I am having bacon with a side of bacon.... Dirty.

I have my bacon deodorant on right now!!!

You're in the heart of shrimp country!

A fresh shrimp taco will rock your world!
Think I may have to pick some up this week and give it a try. Season shrimp with a little salt and some jalapeno powder, grill em up, onion, lettuce on a tort with some sauce. Sounds like a winner to me! Fresh seafood is always good.

Quote of the Month!

Love it.

Morning star farms has some good products. their buffalo nuggets are good(i cook them in oven then deepfry for about 30 seconds to get that crispyness)
Their bacon tastes eeriely like bacon, its about 90% there, the texture isnt exactly the same tho. Their burgers are good too if you dont cook them in the microwave and season them(i usually use cumin and cayenne, then a garlic based hotsauce)

My favorite though is their 'meatless crumbles' or whatever theyre called. I make tacos and chili with it at least once a week. REALLY absorbs the flavor of whatever spices you add to it.

Good that you like it.

I have always had a problem with stuff like fake bacon, fake burgers and such. Why try to be what you are not? If you want a burger, just go and eat a burger!

I myself would rather eat the real deal.

I do eat "other" burgers.

Salmon.

Crab.

Portobello.

I don't understand that if one doesn't want to eat meat for whatever reason, why you would try to make other sheeit taste like it.

why you would try to make other sheeit taste like it.

Well if youre wanting to get healthier and want things that taste pretty damn close.. I think the biggest problem most people have with these products is they just take them out of the box, cook it, and think its bland. Gotta use seasonings!

Ooh, nice one!
tb (= texas blue or the boss :D), you already know that i should eat fish too and that i did a diet...

One of my fav is grilled tuna, is fine as it its, it's good also if marinated with whiskey (and peppers i say). Simple but expensive.
Seabass is healthy and awesome.
Sardines are good, cheap and healthy!

Really want to eat last tortilla!!! Looks VERY tasty! Just eat, i'm hungry again!

I should be a little allergic to shrimps or shellfish (but if i eat loads of them nothing happens... Sometimes something happens if i haven't eat shellfish for a long time) once medic found something, doing again analysis for some problems  nothing found! That's strange!

One of the best pasta dish ever and fits this thread: spaghetti allo scoglio.

Moving (walking is very good) is a very important part.
I found a good thing to have a list to follow, done by a dietits...

Ah, dietist said that hot pepper is an awesome ingredient for diets.

Essegi I should clarify that the whole pescetarian 'thang is less about being a diet and more about a lifestyle.

For me it was more of a natural evolution that was rather easy. Other folks would find it very difficult.

My dear sweet wife for example, I don't reckon she'll ever give up her addiction to fast food junk.

I'm surprised she hasn't bought stock in Taco Bell.
