2013 Pepper Grow Review

I'm not good with posting pics and the upkeep of our garden prohibits me from any kind of detailed glog.  This year I grew the following peppers and I'd thought it would be beneficial to share my experiences.

Aji Dulce - less than 50% germination rate.  Plants were spindly and never really took off.  Low yields, great peppers.  Will grow again.

Jalapeno - 'Traveler' - close to 90% germination.  Bushy 2.5 to 3' plants, good canopy, prolific yields of 2-3" thick walled jalas with little cracking.  Hotter than normal jalas.  Will grow again.

Fish Pepper - about 85% germination.  Beautiful variegated foliage!  3 to 4' tall plants, prolific yields of 2" peppers that start almost whitish and then finish deep red.  Good heat, great for sauces and powders.  One of this year's favorites and will grow again.

Hungarian Paprika - about 75% germination.  Started strong and yielded early.  Bushy 2.5' plants, peppers grow up rather than hang.  Peppers are about 4-6" long and deep red at maturity, have a little heat and once dried made excellent paprika.  Will grow again.

Royal Black - close to 100% germination.  Pretty 3.5' plants, kinda spindly without a lot of leaves.  Peppers are 2-3" and start dark green, then go very dark black then finally to a dark red.  Peppers had solid heat.  More than I was expecting, in a good way.  More seeds than I would have liked inside though.  Made a decent powder.  Don't know if I'll grow that one again.

Numex Big Jim - 70% germination.  4' or so tall plants, good canopy.  6-8" long light green peppers, medium heat, perfect for roasting.  I plant a lot of the 'hatch' type chiles and this is probably my favorite one.  Growing them each year going forward.

Bulgarian Carrot - almost 65% germination.  Short bushy plants, peppers born in upward facing clusters of 3-5.  4" or so long spiky peppers, starts green and matures to a nice orange.  Quite hot, kinda bitter.  Chock full of seeds.  Won't grow again.

Alma Paprika - 50% germination.  Shorter plants, low yield of huge (for the plant) bell type peppers, the few that matured to red were superior to the hungarian paprika when dried - more the 'classic' paprika flavor.  I'll give these a shot again next year in a different spot in the garden and see how they fare.

Cayenne 'long red' - 80% germination, tall upright plants with good canopy.  Pretty prolific; I got about 30-40 peppers off each plant.  6-8" narrow bright red pods, made loads of sauce and powder with them.  Powder is a lighter red (and hotter) than I expected.  Will grow again.

Red Bullet Habanero - 90% germination.  Nice big (more than 4') plants.  Great yields of light red (green to orange to red) peppers, larger than most habs I've seen and quite hot.  Never had this before, taste is really good.  Will grow again.

Trinidad Scorpion - 60% germination.  3-4' tall plants, bushy with lots and lots of leaves.  Good yields of bouncy ball size peppers with little tails on the bottoms.  HOT.  Like holy sh!t why did I put that fucka in my mouth hot.  They tasted almost coppery to me, like biting metal of some sort, but that could have been the taste buds sizzling to death.  Stomach hurt for a couple hours after.  A great addition to sauces and salsa in limited doses.  Will grow again.

A nice mix and several that I'm very glad to have tried.  Already getting seed porn mags in the mail, so my head is filled with visions of what next year's garden will look like.  Several THP members traded seeds with me for this year's grow and I am thankful.  I'll be paying it forward by passing along some seeds of my own this year.  Thanks to this site I have grown better and more peppers than ever before, and thanks again to this site I knew what to do with them when I had too many (SL and Rocketman's hot sauce threads kick major ass) along with Joyner's and several others for their knowledge and direction on drying and making powders.  Many thanks, and can't wait till next year!

nice review

i have most of these in my seed collection and have grown many of them good peppers
except for the BULGARIAN CARROT :P BLAH!! bad pepper IMHO
i see you didn't like it either

the ROYAL BLACK is a ornamental and would most likely be good only for that purpose

did you get the RED BULLET from me sorry don't remember??

yes the FISH is a great pepper too

i hope you do better in the coming season

thanks your friend Joe

Thanks for the info AjiJoe!  I had no idea the Royal Black was an ornamental.  I did not get the red bullet habs from you, it was another forum member.  I'm very interested in growing aji peppers next year though, so any info or tips on cultivation and varieties you could share would be appreciated.  :)

Great overview of how things went! As far as black pods go, if you wanna add a stunning plant that makes great flakes and powder I suggest Goat's Weed. Beautiful Annuum variety with a Pubesence fuzz to it. Leaves are silvery grey with pods that turn jet black out of the gate then ripen to a fire engine red color.

They are seedy, but they are one of my favorites for flakes, powders and rubs...very hot for an Annuum.

Big Jims are a staple at my house too...can't beat them. Anaheims have half the flavor and none of the kick.

I like how you grow...for taste and use instead of world records.

Great Job!
Shane

Really excellent suggestion Steve - that Goats Weed pic is gorgeous! I will definitely seek those seeds out for next year's grow.  Thanks for the praise as well.  This site has inspired and educated me and I'm very grateful for the community here.

They tasted like a cross between a jala and a serrano if that makes any sense.  When immature (green) they were like serranos but as they went from dark black to red they sweetened a bit.  Best for making powder imo.

Thanks again for your response Joe!

yeah it would thats a typical Annum  flavor
yes powder would be the way to go here but also they would be good to color and round out sauces, i would not make a sauce with them alone

thanks your friend Joe
