OhioGrown 2014, second time around, 4-6-14 update.

well, it's another year, and I promise this year to add weekly updates until the end of the season. I drifted off mid-summer last year and never showed any finished pods, plants, sauces, powders or anything! So, , , I started my super hots this afternoon after shoveling 4 inches of snow off my driveway. No overwinters this year, just seeds. I planted 15 White Ghost, 10 7 Pod Congo, and 5 each of the following: 7 Pod Orange, Large Yellow, White, Yellow Brain Strain, 5 Butch T's, and 5 Large Bell Peppers (as an experiment). All my seeds came from pepperlover.com. Started in peat pots, inside, with a heat mat and 7 inch humidity dome. Here's ground zero:

All right, OG!  Welcome to grow 2014!  Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Nice to see you starting all that heat while it is close to zero outside. Too bad pepper heat can't warm up the outside.

Alrighty, a week's gone by since I planted the seeds. I've got a few hooks, and a few others breaking the surface. I had a little mold, so I mixed a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with a cup of water, and sprayed down the pellets. Hopefully it works and I don't end up with any damping off. Here's a couple pics:

That's a closeup of my biggest one so far. Here's another shot of L>R Yellow Brain Strain, 7 Pod Orange, and the biggest one so far, the 7 Pod White:

I opened both vents on my humidity dome to cut down on the buildup of condensation. I hung one set of lights in the closet. I'll be starting them in the small plastic pots for now. The closet wasn't big enough to hang the light completely horizontal, but I think with some different levels in there, I can always move then when they need more space to grow upwards. I'll be using Happy Frog potting soil up until they go in the ground. Here's a pic of my small grow area for now. In march they go out to my insulated woodshop in the garage.

I'm getting decent temps in this room as well. I'm adjusting the vent sometimes so it doesn't get too cold, or hot. Thanks for checking in, see you next week!!

Here's a shot of my final sauces and spices from last year:

Babies look good.

That is a bunch of sauces and pepper powder. Perfect for the cold winter we are having.

well, yesterday I had 8 hooks/starts and today I have 24. Here's a quick shot of some of them. Still kinda boring to look at, I'm just surprised at how many took off...

thanks JJJ, i thought it was quite alot to show up overnight. i guess i got the temps and humidity a little more fine-tuned this year. Once they start getting some roots and true leaves, they'll go into their starter pots.

Tripled your hookage - not bad!

If the seedlings/cotys are boring why do we spend so
much time staring at them?     I'm sure if I look
hard enough, they will grow faster!

Well, 2 days later and I'm at about 45 sprouts now. I planted 2 seeds into each pellet to increase my chances at germination, so a few of them have 2 sprouts in them. Oh well, the smaller of the 2 will get removed before potting up, which should be within  a week or so, once the roots get a little longer, and the true leaves start emerging. Here's a pic or two:

In the second pic, the row on the far right is Bell Peppers. It was my wife's idea to start them with my other stuff. I have a suspicion that they will get way too big before I can get them planted outside in late May. Round 2 of seedlings will start in February with my Jalapeno, Rocoto, and Pepperoncini...

oh yeah, I forgot to add. I have the germination kit by my T5 fixture (4 bulb). It's not directly under them, but just to the side. I find a heating mat and a light too close will make it too hot in there. The temps in the closet are normally around high 60's to 70. I have the vent from the furnace closed to this room as well.

Looking good. I'm surprised that you are waiting until Feb to start your rocotos. They were the first ones I started back before Christmas. My monzanos grew so slow last year, I wanted to give these pubes all the head start I could.

hmm, maybe I should start them as soon as I have room in my germination kit. I didn't realize that they were so slow growing. I think today i'll get the bell peppers into pots and start my rocotos. . .

Ok, it's been a few days now. I've finished planting all the seeds I'll be doing for now. I'll be starting more once I get moved out of the house, an into my insulated woodshop in the garage. So far to date I have the following in small pots:14 White Bhut, 10 7 Pod Congo SR Gigantic, 5 Large Bell, 5 Yellow Brain Strain, 4 7 Pod White, and 3 7 Pod Orange. I planted 3 more 7 Pod Yellow Large, 5 Jalapenos, and 3 Pepperoncini. That will leave me enough room for around 60 plants in the closet, under 2 T5 fixtures, 4 bulbs each. Here's a couple pics for ya:

So there it is for now. Doing much better this time than last year. Once I move out into the garage, I'll only be doing more Jalapenos, Pepperoncini, tomatoes, cucumbers, and maybe some more Large Bell. Thanks for checking it out. Peace!!

a lot of my pictures you can't see shit from the label sticks. In a couple of weeks they'll be bigger than them, and spreading their love upwards towards the light. . . .
