Just getting started

So I've got some seeds headed my way - tabasco, habanero, sweet banana, and sweet jalapeno.  Was going to start them in a tray with a vented dome, then move to 1 gal root pouch after they leaf out, then transplant again when they're ready for the 5 gal size.  I have an outbuilding that they'll be comfy in until the weather warms a bit more, and plenty of aged horse manure/soil mix.  From what I've been reading the 5 gal pouch should be sufficient for each plant to survive and thrive, yes?

It's been a while since I've tried to garden anything, is there anything I'm missing?  It will not surprise me if that's the case  Thanks!

:welcome:

sounds like you got it dialed in.  make sure to think about ferts and pests.  get all that ready before you need it because you will need it.

any problem you have for any type of grow you are doing  there are dudes on thp that will help you.  this place be cool like that.

have fun and start ya a glog and go hit up the welcome thread.

p.s.  if you into cooking this is also a great place.

Welcome, punchy! Loved my only trip to Nor Cal. Interesting climate up there.

I'd probably go from 2.5" -> 4" -> 1 gal ->5 gal or bigger if you can.
Depends on how your timing with the plant start and plant out date, how much room and light you have, you might even skip the 1 gal.

The critical thing, I think is strong overhead light if you don't have a greenhouse then right away best rig some CF,T8 or T5 fluorescents or you might even find some used HID cheap in your neck of the woods :D
A heat mat or something rigged for bottom heat is almost essential for peppers, eggplant, and helps tomatoes.
Last year was my first and  only  successful seed -to-pod year , so I'm no veteran.

I'd sign up for the Atomic Pepper train if you are looking for a wide range of peppers to grow.

You've just signed on with the cutting edge, world-wide  pepper growing cult  community  here at THP. :D
Welcome and enjoy the journey.

Thanks for the quick replies :)

I will check out the local pest situation.  As far as fertilizers, I've honestly never needed anything other than our manure/soil mix with other veggies, but will keep an eye on the plants and let them tell me what they need.

Welcome to the forum! THP certainly is the place to hang out if you have any questions about anything Capsicum - related.
Your plan for your first grow seems solid enough. There are only two things that stick out to me. First, if you can swing it, use a larger container than 5 gal. I use both 5 gal. buckets and 15" pots as containers and the plants do better in the pots because of the larger diameter at the top. Peppers tend to have a wide, shallow root system that seems to get cramped in a container like a 5 gal. bucket. I wish I had 18" pots...
Second, at the risk of being "that guy", do you have your heart set on the varieties you mentioned? If not, most members of this site (myself included) would be proud to give you some options (free seeds)… Ever tried a red or chocolate habanero? How about a Corno di Toro? I don't mean to dump on your variety choices. I'm just sayin' if I had to decide on only four varieties to go in my garden, I would have to take a couple of weeks to pick among all the crazy peppers available through all the good people of this community.

Sorry. The last sentence should read: "…all the good peppers available through all the crazy people of this community.".

Heh, it's all good. The sweet peppers I already have, and the Tabasco and habs are on their way from a friend. Not sure if the habs are red, orange, or chocolate, as he had all three and I didn't specify. If I end up actually getting this stuff started I'll look into more but I'm gonna have my hands full as it is, ha. :D

And in that spirit I jumped on Flchilehead's offer of 10 ea of bhut, supers, and datils :D
