So I actually have to thank J.T. Delaney for getting me started with this whole seed swapping thing, it is freaking addictive!
Anyway, I have a lot of Yubari Melon seeds saved from melons we received as a gift last year, and am looking to trade for interesting edibles. PM me if interested and have something neat to trade. Will airmail 15ish seeds in a baggie either in a bubble envelope, or bubble wrapped in an normal envelope. Also the post office here takes them as normal mail w/o labeling.
As far as interesting trades goes, recently I traded for some lemon cucumbers and black krim tomatoes (not easily found in Japan) on reddit, if that gives you any ideas. Oooh! I am looking for fig seeds, and of course interesting peppers work too!
I am also growing these for the first time this year and can guarantee a fantastic germination rate. I had 7/10 pop via the ziploc method within 4 days. Probably would have hit a hundred had I been patient and waited.
A little background on these melons:
In Japan, these melons are only grown in Yubari City, Hokkaido, hence the name. Outside of Japan I believe they are called Yubari King, although I don't know if anyone actually sells them. They are very pricey melons---indeed most people do not buy these, they receive them---usually given as summer gifts here in Japan. Why they are so expensive, I dunno. What I do know is that they are the best melons I have ever had. If you are a cantaloupe fan, these are the melons for you.
I don't know why they are only grown in Yubari City, but from what I have read it appears the soil there is special. The soil is supposed to be volcanic ash soil and supposedly this make it easy to keep the top dry and also makes it easy to control the temp of the soil. The seeds are started in isolated greenhouses in February. Hokkaido is a very cold place and the plants are considered very hardy. I think these would be an interesting grow for you hydro folks!
Anyway, let me know if interested!
