From new to lost sanity, in a few short months...

Hi all,

A complete newbie here - long time lurker, first time poster and undertaking my first real grow outside of a few plants on windowsill. Will swing by the Intro's in the next few days to say a proper Hi!

I live in the Wellington region of New Zealand, where it's just not overly warm most of the time.

(Around 22`c/70`f through summer days and 15`c/60`f or so over night, with too much wind. It's then 12`c/54`f in winter down to 0`c overnight, with way too much wind). Nights are pretty erratic, with frosts occurring when you think they shouldn't, and to add to it, we're often in drought for most of the summer. Much of the problem is that we're very much effected by microclimates, meaning from one place to another (even a 10 minutes drive apart) there's a fairly, sometimes dramatic, different set of humidity, temperature, frost, wind/wind chill factors - we've only recently bought the property, so am not sure of the specifics of where we are.

Basically, it's not great for peppers...

...so I thought I would take them purely indoors and eliminate many of the factors. Winter is coming, and being an impatient man, this will let me indulge the budding addiction as soon as I want to.

We've a pretty warm house so I'm taking advantage of that - even when it's single digit `c outside, both the garage and my office sit around 70`f-80`f. I'll be choosing which location, dependant on what my wife decides I am allowed to do, over the coming weeks.

I've started 4 varieties as an experiment, with results I am happy with to date:

Early Jalapeno
Chocolate fatali
Santa Fe Grande
Filius Blue

I'll be planting, likely over the next month, around 8 other varieties. Will give this lot a bit of time, first, to see how well I mess them up.

I've a bit of an unusual setup (?) to date (I think, anyway - not something I've seen) - had some cheap 14w or 18w panels lying around, which I used to use for microgreens, so I thought I'd give them a go. I've no idea what I am doing other than conceptually, so why not add to that potential for failure with a bit of something different on top?

Once my babies these seedlings are bigger, they'll go under 36 watt blue/red led single bulbs, which I've read on here have had fairly good success. They've been 'sprouted' for about 8-9 days now.

To start with, though, here's my 'grow room':

Here they are in their wee pyramid of light:

This was taken yesterday:

(Top left around clockwise: Early Jalapeno, Chocolate fatali, Santa Fe Grande, Filius Blue)

(Apologies for the average quality of photo - wasn't the best lighting in the room and the focus is not keen on the height of the subjects).

Not sure what the deal is with the Filius - there're two almost black plants and one fairly green on... will monitor it.

My main question at this point is: when should I separate them?

I over-seeded and got 100% germination... so, oh what a shame, I have to have more plants than I originally thought! They've big 3" jiffy's so there's a bit of room for movement around them, but I'm not sure of when to split so they are strong enough, but without having to tear the roots apart too much.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I'll keep popping updates in every few days or as/if things get interesting. All quite exciting for me, but it's not what many of you are used to in terms of volume - thanks for taking the time to have a look, none the less.

Great community here, by the way - you all seem exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. Something hard to find.

That is a fancy, contemporary setup you have! :-) Very artistic, I like it!

Can I ask where you got your 36w bulbs?

And good luck with your grow this year!

Thank you, filmost - honestly, it's that way because they're just a tad too big to fit side by side on the shelf, else I would have just attached them to the shelf above. Bodged them in place with whatever was lying around my office at the time...

The bulbs will be these ones here - http://www.aliexpress.com/item/4PCS-led-grow-light-E27-36W-8-Red-4-Blue-LED-Hydroponics-plant-grow-lights/899247334.html - which are simply a 4-pack of some that were recommended by another grower here on this forum (http://www.thehotpepper.com/topic/45338-copenhagen-led-grow/#entry953528).

Hey I was looking at the single version of those. I actually got in touch with them to see if they would customize and they ended up offering 6 for 100USD with free FedEx instead. You might see if they'll give you a deal.
Great stuff, thank you! Was going to order first thing tomorrow, but I might just have to bug them instead now! Many thanks.

Just a quick update for the day - the little fellows are ticking along pretty well.

Not sure why, but the camera has kicked out their colours quite a bit - they are all solid green and not 'splodgey' like they appear here. The shades of colour are correct, just without the patchiness.

Pretty impressed with the speed at which they are putting on growth - will split them out this weekend.

They've just had their second water of their short life, too, so are a little soggy. Watering the plate to the line of the light vs dark area to let it suck up through the jiffy pots. Surprised the wife's not yet told me off for using a plate... not sure why, however I suspect she's been shoe shopping in quiet protest.

Going set up another batch - I can see this is working acceptably, so happy to try some more:

  • Carolina Reaper (Hp22b)
  • Giant Ghost  (Giant Bhut Jolokia )
  • Yatzy (Yatsufusa)
  • Kung Pao
  • Black Jalapeno
  • Giant Jalapeno
  • Mini Bell
  • Sweet Banana

Then the following lot, which are in transit at the moment, sometime in the couple of weeks:
  • 5 colour marble
  • Bolivian rainbow
  • Fresno pepper
  • Fushimi sweet
  • Paprika
  • Cascabella
  • Yellow lemon drop (hot lemon)

Hey bro ... Welcome ... Sweet little setup you have there ... Might have to look at getting some of those LED s myself.
Where in Wellington are you from??
I myself am originally from Taranaki.

Best of luck with the season ahead .. Keep those precious little babies out of that wind!!

I'm toying the with the idea of replacing the CFLs in my current setup with LEDs, so I'll be keeping a close eye on your results.  Good luck with your grow.

Thanks gents, much appreciated. Will keep it updated as things progress - first lot of lights ordered today.

Trippa, I am down the coast in Paraparaumu - easier to say Wellington, and you get the idea. Awesome to see the number of Kiwi's here. Where you at now? Did I see somewhere here that you're in Oz?

Update for today - I took the plunge. I split the jiffy pots. I may have killed a good portion of the little ones... There was a lot of tearing sounds, the sound of a bazzillion tiny roots (and some bigger ones) being torn from their mothers. We shall see what happens next, I guess.

DSC08681.jpg

Those with two in them seemed to be fine - the Chocolate Fatali and the Santa Fe should be ok, the early jalapeno's seemed to have some massive tap roots that I saved, but the Filius blue's may not make it. There were 3 of them in there and it was just too hard to separate them, even with the soaking I gave the jiffy - lots of tiny roots all intertwined.

I've put two seeds in the next lot of jiffy pots, and will either cull the weakest from each or will split them, dependant on the outcomes from the splits I've just done.

Either way, they are all in their own 10oz cups now.

I've just put down, as a replacement and because I am happy with the results in the jiffy's, the following:

  • Carolina Reaper (Hp22b)
  • Giant Ghost  (Giant Bhut Jolokia )
  • Yatzy (Yatsufusa)
  • Kung Pao
  • Black Jalapeno
  • Giant Jalapeno
And for the wife, as she's not a fan of heat:
  • Mini Bell x2
  • Sweet Banana x 2
DSC08684.jpg

The others should be on their way to me from PepperJoe's (5 colour marble, Bolivian rainbow, Fresno, Fushimi sweet, Paprika, Cascabella, Yellow lemon drop (hot lemon)).

These will go in next weekend, if they're here in time.

Got more starts coming I see ... I hope you have plenty of room to keep them over the windy winter. Yeah after I went to uni I lived in a couple of places in the North Island and ended up on the Gold Coast ... Been here 7-8 years now ... Would love to come home though and buy some land and grow Chilli's in a glass house

Nice setup here and a comprehensive seed list.  How long you been workin with LEDs and whats your thoughts on their output?

A quick update for the day - they've all lived!

They were split from the Jiffy's into a mix of peat, from the peat pots plus a bit more, and shop-bought finished compost. Not the greatest choices, but it's what we had lying around and due to poor life choices (we went to the pub) we couldn't drive out to get some proper supplies.

The light in the below photo washes them out a bit - they're a nice, dark green - it's 0545 and every light in the house is on to wake us up, so it's pretty bright...

Thanks Trippa, yeah man, should have enough room if I can convince the wife I need to take up one side of the double garage... wish me luck!

Lived in Aus, Sydney, for near on 5 years myself - not a bad wee spot you're in now at all. Would love to do the same, however the land prices plus the cost of the 'houses, coupled with the market, make it hard. There're a few people doing it, and from your glog, I reckon you could easily be one too.

Cheers Unk, I've been working with those panels for a few years now, mostly growing microgreens. They seem to work well - not for long or far in to the plants' life, but well for the stage they are now and the next few weeks. Overall, from research, LED's certainly have the 'balls' to be able to keep plants going, without doubt. Most of the research comes for 'alternative' crops - those that are 'less than legal' in most places - but there are certainly some growers of greens and tomatoes et al that have had very good success. Honestly, I won't comment further as I've only got 'paper research' - nothing solid or backed by my own personal findings - other than to say that all evidence supports their effectiveness. Look at mikkelbob's glog - he's doing very well with them.

Healthy looking chili babies! Happy to see you've been inspired to do a bit of LED shopping

mikkelbob, you're the one that confirmed my findings in LED research were actually doable, and were, in fact, the one to inspire me to try LED's applied to chilli plants - many, many thanks. Many thanks, too, for confirming through your glog that they do work. Awesome work!

Coming back in here to update this has surprised me - not the act of doing so, but how quickly these chillies grow! Having never grown from seed before, it's an amazing process to see how much they grow in such a short time!

As of today, I've built a grow box. First thing the wife said when she saw it was "WTF? That's dodgy..."

Got a couple of 130cm (~52") shelf kits from our local big-box (The Warehouse) for ~$12 each and was stoked - solid sets for damned cheap. I then bodged them together, and still have enough for another one of the same, for a wee seed area and a larger plant area below it.

Waiting on some 36w bulbs and they'll go up for the bottom bit of it.

Here's the abomination:

(It's not on a lean, it's angled from the wall because... I didn't notice until I put the photo here).

Will tidy the wires and make them safer after this post is up.

And the effect?

1602014.jpg

At the bottom there are another 6 that popped recently -
  • Yatzy (Yatsufusa)
  • Kung Pao
  • Black Jalapeno
  • Giant Ghost  (Giant Bhut Jolokia)
  • Mini Bell x2
  • Giant Jalapeno (not shown here, but has just hooked and will go in the 'purple room' tomorrow)
Still waiting on:
  • Carolina Reaper (Hp22b)
  • Sweet Banana x2
I reckon this lot got a bit cold, so will have to see what comes from them. They've been a lot slower to hook and haven't been as successful as the first lot. Got in them in the hot water cupboard now - started hooking after I moved them there.

Thanks for dropping by for a look - would love to hear your thoughts on the setup as it stands.

Cheers,

Dave.

I've not been posting for a while, sorry, but thought I'd drop by with a bit of an update. Many, many changes.

(I also spend the day on a computer so tend to avoid it from home at the moment).

I've gone a little mad - from my 'sane' beginnings to 90 plants and another 40 seeds just gone down this evening...

I've built a dedicated 3 meter (10') shelf (3 tiers - seedlings, middlings and big'uns), bought lights enough for 3000 lumens per ft2 and repurposed my workbench for planting and care.

The wife is not amused and the cat has so many new things to play with...

It's about 18`c (65`f) in the garage during the day and about 15'c (60`f) during the night - they seem to be surviving, though growing slowly. The growth they're putting on - especially undergrowth - under the new LED bars (generic brand from aliexpress.com) is excellent. The light meter shows they're getting enough light and the lights put out just enough warmth to keep the chill out of their shelves.

Without further ado -

This is the top shelf (1m/3ft long and 70cm/2.3ft high) with the light reflector ($2 hypothermia blanket, thank you aliexpress) down:

20140613_205140.jpg

Same again with the reflector up:

20140613_205159.jpg

And the little ones coming through -

20140613_205214.jpg

Growing are:

? - Alma/Yatzi 2
? - Cascabella 2
? - Hot Lemon Drop 1
? - Unknown Soldier Hab 1
Alma Paprika 7
Banana Pepper 3
Black Jalapeno 8
Carolina Reaper 2
Cascabella 5
Chocolate Fatalii 6
Early Jalapeno 2
Fresno 6
Fushimi Sweet 1
Generic Habanero 5
Giant Bhut Jolokia 2
Giant Jalapeno 8
Hot Lemon Drop 1
Kung Pao 9
Mini Bell Pepper 3
Mulato Isleno 6
Santa Fe Grande 2
Sapporo 2
Yatsufusa 6
Grand Total 90

The question marks are from where I had a minor (read: curse-laden) incident of dropping a seed tray... the ?'s are what I think these probably are, through guessing which displaced labels went where, and comparing the seedlings to others then against what I knew I didn't know... was displeased, but adds another layer of fun!

And I've just planted another 40 - 4 each of:

Medusa
Black Scorpion Tongue
Explosive Ember
Hanoi Red
Omnicolour
Purple Pumpkin
Starfish
Australian Broome
Lombok
NuMex Twilight

So... anyone have any land near Wellington, New Zealand, where I could build a bigger garage?  ;)

Cheers for dropping by.

- Dave.

Nice setup you have there. You are going to have some massive plants when you plant out latter this year, such a good head start.
Nice to see fellow kiwis getting things on  :)
