Cheap chives and a neat pot

Well, Mom wanted chives for Mother's day so I set off to WallyWorld to get some. Found these...no less than 5 chive youngun's in a 4-5" peat pot for $2.00.

So, I decided to give her the 3 nicest ones, and kept a couple for myself. I can TLC the weaker ones better than she can, and chives literally grow like weeds anyways. I figure they'll grow together and need a re-potting in a while...hopefully she doesn't kill it by then. ;)

The very helpful (and cute) gal working in the garden dept. found me this neat pot for planting them in for Mom. It's a self-watering bottom watering pot. For 96 cents. :-)

I shoulda taken a pic of the inside of the pot showing how it's made, but I spaced it.

Gotta love it..and it's made with recycled materials. :)

I like that that gal, she seems to know how I think. She's helped me before with items, and doesn't try to upsell me..she just finds what I want even if I don't really know what I want..LOL!

*two thumbs up*

Yeah, it is a pretty cool pot. This one is the 5.2" size (it says on the bottom), perhaps yours are larger ones?

I was pretty surprised at the chives resilency. With 5 of the little ones in that one small peat pot for who knows how long, it was a completely rootbound mass of peatyy guck.

Since I separated 'em, transplanted, and gave a little fert and water and sun, they've perked up quite a bit. :)

yea chives are very hardy plants & very quick for regrowth after a cutting (7-10 days mine grow back to about 10" tall)
onion chives grow naturally here, garlic chives were more picky for regrowing for me, took a couple trys to get some garlic chives to come back to life here but got a small one to live now.

heres 4 of my onion chives, have a smaller 1 not in picture & the small garlic chive is behind the last one bunch (so 2 bunchs not seen in pic)

Yum, those look real nice! Reminds me of the huge clump we had in the garden when I was a kid.

Onion chives are all they had at WM, but I think they'll be fine. :)

When I was a kid my Mum used to do a really nice salad where a part of it was a hard boiled egg (cooled) that you cut in half, then took the yolk out and mashed it in salad cream/mayonnaise and chopped chives, then put that back in the white of the egg. I loved it.
