Pallet Tech Projects

Yep, Pallet Tech, and yes this is what I'm talking about:

Around here my wife has found several places that get a ton of these in and they give them away for free. I said FREE!!!! most are in pretty good shape and a bit weathered but the weathering adds a lot a character to the projects.
 
OK, let me back up a minute and explain where this came from. My daughter is getting married in August and wants a country theme. Finding the country kind of stuff around her like old Barn wood, crates and barrels is next to impossible and expensive when you do find it. Enter Pallet wood, which for free lets me build just about what ever they want. But that's not all, oh no that's not all.
 
I talked to the wife about getting a Potting Table to put out back. She agreed, especially when I said I could build one out of pallet wood for free and showed her this:

Then I found this, but didn't show her ;)

I might even add a sink onto it when I find one for free, hello, did you know that there's a FREE section in the For Sale portion of Craig's List?
 
Oh, the possibilities don't end there though, look at these projects:

As I get started on these projects over the next couple of weeks I'll post up Pics of the build. What I'm hoping is that if y'all get into this we can have a "How To" where anyone can find out how to build something cool out of a free resource.

Yeah. That's what I'm talking about. Thanks for posting this. I'm using them to get my containers off the ground and making compost bins. Take them apart and endless projects can be made. I had a neighbor once build a nice shed out of pallets. Stucco and all. I'm in to reclaiming. Not that I'm to cheap to buy stuff just don't like to see it go to waste. I work construction. Lots of waste. Good luck with the projects thanks for sharing.
 
      When I worked at a greenhouse as a warehouse sup,I had the job of getting rid of all the pallets that the peat and perlite come on.I struck a deal with a pallet refurbishing company in Omaha.He would send a semi down every couple months to pic a load.I got 5 bucks a skid....Good thing because wages working in a greenhouse is low. ;)

Oh yeah, there's nasty stuff used in treating some lumber and knowing about the HT marking is good to know, thanks for posting.  I always spray down the pallet wood with a bleach water solution and clear coat the finished project. For wood that will be used for planters I've read the Linseed oil, which is made from Flax Seed or Mineral Oil are good preservatives that will also work will with an organic grow. 
 
I really like the second potting table above but I'm going to modify it some. I want to add in a dirt bin where I can dump the dirt out an old pot, clean out the debris through a screen as the dirt goes into the bin and then fill a new pot from the dirt that's there after I've added new dirt and amendments. I also want to add a sink and faucet to the design. I'm not sure yet whether I'll have the sink drain through a hose into the yard or if I'll drain it into a 5 gallon bucket but it'll be draining through a hose either way so...
 
Here's the plans I drew up last night. It was done in Visio so if anyone would like a copy of the original pm me and I'll arrange to email you a copy.

It doesn't show in the plans but the top boards on the table top will be run through the router and will be put together with tongue and groove. I'm using to layers of wood running in different directions to add strength to the table top.

Other than the Pallets that will supply most of the wood I'm going to need the following:
 
3 4 x 4 x 4 x 8's
An old sink
Plastic storage bin
Wire mesh
4" Deck Screws 
Nails for nail gun
 
I'm also going have to pick up a new belt sander, my old one died and might have to find a Saws all to help with taking apart the pallets.
 
Note On Pallets:
   While pallets can be deconstructed with a crow bar, there are some companies that make pallets that use a twisting nail and these can be very difficult to take apart. This is where a Saws all comes in handy as you can just cut through all the nails. There are even a lot of sites that promote pallet projects that recommend you just use the saw. It's faster and you'll end up with more usable wood.
 
I'll also use a lockable hasp on the doors as I have 2 little ones that I don't want getting into any chemicals that might be stored under the table. I've also changed the design so that I have 2 drawers under the table to store tools in. Once I get the project started I'll know more about how many pallets it's actually going to take to complete the build.

Awesome ideas!

They are awesome for big bonfires, too! We used to set a 15-stack soaked in gas ablaze at camp to start the summer off every July 1st. We lit it on an island across the lake and everyone watched from the mainland. Peaked higher than a lot of the trees on the island for a few minutes.

I also used to work in a grocery warehouse as a pallet stripper and threw out 1000s of the "shit skids" while sorting the others based on colour. (The heavier ones are kept - I think they're rented maybe, in Canada they are called CHEP and CPC) I always thought it was a waste tossing the lighter ones, although I usually did make quite a mess of them with the forklift.
 
Aaron, always up for a bit of fun with a forklift, though the ones I operated were usually loaded with small arms ammo or some such item in the AHA (Ammo Holding Area)

Haha back then I do t know if I'd have trusted myself with ammo! There were a few long night shifts that I remember watermelons and 2L bottles of pop crashing down on either side of me (whoops!)

DM eh? That's AWESOME!! I'm actually on an American Airlines flight as I write this headed down to Belize for a week underwater while my better half bronzes up on the beach. Looking forward to getting my DM and hopefully Instructors and tech somewhere down the line.

Back on topic I think I might take a look and see if I can find some free pallets and build something cool when I get back!
