condiment Dried salsa recipe ?

Do any of you ever make a salsa or sauce with nothing but dried peppers or powder for heat ? The reason I asked is my wife just got a great deal on some red bell peppers and I'm out of any fresh hot peppers. I was thinking of using some bells as the major part of the salsa and using dried for heat. I just didn't want to waste some good bell peppers if it doesn't turn out. Thanks !

I love dried goat weed to add heat and great annuum flavor to sauces and salsas. they easily rehydrate with warm water.
Sometimes i use O.J. for a yummy strangeness.

If your talking a typical pico de gallo type salsa with fresh tomato, onion, bell pepper, cilantro, garlic etc...and a bit of dried pepper for heat, yes it will work great.  Be careful of the amount of dried chiles as it can get real hot real quick.  If you have some non-hot chile people in the family, split the batch and make one medium and the other as hot as you wish.

Red bells won't have the overpowering taste like green bells, but it will still have a strong taste unless you use a bunch of tomatoes also.

WHAT?! Classic pico is tomato, onion, JALAPENO (or other chile) NOT green bell. I am revoking your username. Green bells instead of jalapenos?????

Wow, what will her new username be, something generic like Member 32 :)

I can use some of the same letters.

I think it was a typo because I had asked the question because I had some bell peppers but no fresh hot peppers.

Does that mean if it's a pico with tomato, onion, (some kind of jalapeno or other hot pepper) and green bell peppers it is NOT A PICO? Does that mean if it's made with tomato, onion, and some dried peppers it's not a pico?

c'mon Boss, .....bell peppers can be used or not as desired in pico but of course they are not the heat of the sauce.  Doesn't mean they can't be used in addition to the dried chiles the OP was asking about.  Just like cilantro can be used or not, and garlic can be used or not, and lime can be used or not....

It's all good Boss.  Let's have a drink and contemplate the Ultimate Pico Recipe!  Sounds like a good topic for a new thread~  :)  I'd love to try others's recipes for fresh pico.

SL I thought you were saying you thought the green peppers in pico were green bells. I'm still not sure that's not what you were saying. You did say, quote, "typical pico de gallo type salsa with fresh tomato, onion, bell pepper,...". No backpedaling! hehe.

No, the green peppers in Pico isn't usually green bells, but there could be green bells in there with the jals and serranos.

The OP was asking about using some fresh Red Bell Peppers with some dried chiles in a salsa or sauce so I thought making a fresh pico sauce would be the best option.  I make salsa with green bells, but didn't name green bells in my first post as the topic was red bells.  Could see where he could use a few red bells in a pico-type salsa with some dried chiles.

I was quick-typing in a lunch break.  Probably could have been more specific.

Savina - I often make salsa with rehydrated chiles (then blended), garlic, onion, 'penos, etc. Sometimes I throw in some fresh toms. It's not chunky like pico, but a bit more saucy. I'm not the biggest fan of red bells in salsa, so I save mine for Cajun dishes and stir fry. haha But try a small batch, and see what you think! Food is for playing with! ;)

++ what JuJu said.  This is probably one of the few places where you are encouraged to play with your food.

But he doesn't have fresh, so the green bells would be the only fresh pepper. I see what you are saying though SL. Imitate a pico with bells instead of jalapenos, and spice it up with powder, so it tastes like a jalapeno. I'm not sure that would work so well. Maybe in pinch, but he didn't mention pico so not sure it's the best solution.

I'd skip the bells and do what CJ is sayin'. Plenty of salsas can be made from dried peppers! Rehydrate, add some sesame seeds, olive oil, garlic, whatever... blend it up.

SavinaRed was looking to use a score at the grocery of  RED bell peps (not GREEN) and didn't have any fresh hot peppers....  was asking if dried chiles could be used for the heat in a sauce or salsa instead of fresh chiles....

By the time this salsa discussion could end, them red bell peps will be LongGone.
My suggestion was to use the red bell peps in a semi-typical Pico-style salsa using dried chiles for the heat along with tomato, onion, RED BELL PEPPER (because that's what he wants to use!), dried chiles for heat, cilantro.....you get the idea....  That's all.

LOL red or green they're bells, not for me as the only fresh pepper in pico but like you said, he's probably figured it out by now. ;)

Kinda like saying, I have a head of lettuce, should I make cole slaw? No. LOL

LOL Y'all are crackin me up. Pico de gallo no place for bells. salsa another story. my 2 bits.

JuJu statement trumps everything, just have fun wit it. I luv this place!

Agreed. (Pico is a type of salsa but I know whatcha mean... and I've had no issue with it in some jarred salsa I've had... cooked bells and onion, as a flavor that adds to it.)

Yeah, a certain type of salsa with no bells. lol

Wait, what am I doing did I just enter a argument about salsa with Salsalady.  its my birthday gotta go now
