"fake" yellow morugas?

Bought these yellow moruga seeds from samen chilli shop in december and have now got my first peppers :). however they don't look like true morugas to me? but of course you guys know better than me so any help identifying/ confirming would be appreciated.

I've had a handful of my yellow Morugas come out like that on the same plant as ones with tails, so I wouldn't worry too much.

ah right, this photo is.. 2 weeks old i think, and theres now 3 more peppers, none of which have any discernible tail yet, but they are tiny, so we shall wait and see. Being a first time grower im not too bothered as long as theyre hot and survive my clumsy care!

Will do! The one pictured hasn't changed in size in over a week and the others forming look basically identical with no hint of a tail. One on another plant from the same seeds is a little more elongated but again no tail and quite smooth and shiny. I will post pictures when they ripen but I feel this will be the final shape.

Well, I would still consider it a Moruga, albeit, a smooth-skinned variation. Several of mine came out quite similar to this, and there were no other peppers to cross pollinate, and like gasificada said, there's variation in the same breed of pepper. It's not unlike breeds of dog... Any two random Great Danes won't necessarily look identical, there'll be individual characteristics like coat, height, weight, etc., but they're still both Great Danes.

another pepper on the same plant had "ripened" despite only being about 8mm across and i tasted it, there was a fair bit of heat but nothing extreme, but i guess thats probably partly due to the fruit not being fully formed?

Weather temps and the amount of water and fertilizer can make a difference in pod shape and size oh yes and even taste. and if you add in the abuse that the plant might go through it will add into the whats and hows of the pod.
I have not grown a yellow moruga but I have grown a yellow brain the first pods were small with just a few bumps and fairly smooth later in the season the pods were almost twice the size and were very bumpy and looked more like a brain should I have also grown red moruga's with the same problem the first batch of pods had almost no tail and were quite smooth but as the weather got hotter and I had cut back on the amount of water( just watering when they were limp ) and stripped the leaves off of the stems and stuck a couple of toothpicks in various limbs the plant started to throw out some really amazing very bumpy and some what twisted pods with little tails they proved that they were the real bad asses on the block. Just give them some time cut back on their water and give them hell. Then they will start giving you pods that look more like you expect.

Thanks for the advice, I've cut back on water and started only watering when it starts to Wilt, and the new peppers forming are really gnarly looking, very wrinkled and a bit more pointy!

Yup, definitely more Moruga-like! Very much like the pods I have on my Yellow Moruga plants :)

I did the same, and even in the heat now, I'm watering them only a couple times a week, which has definitely made a difference! :)
