Chilitron 3000 (Photos)

Well I finally finished off my "Chilitron 3000" heated / artificially illuminated seed / plant raiser so I can grow through the current West Aussie (mild) winter and be ready for action in spring...

This is the shot of the basic setup - a bench in the garage. 2 x 36W Grow Lights (I almost went for 1 x Daylight + 1 x Warm White regular fluoros as per other posts but the grow lights weren't that expensive).

Its built in 2 foam "broccoli boxes" that I hotwire cut in half and joined with polyurethane to make it super long. Heating comes from a vivarium heat mat controlled by a thermostat. Seed raisers are from local hardware Bunnings. There's a min / max aquarium thermometer "planted" in one of the cells to see the real temperature of the soil. Water is stood / boiled and applied with a mist bottle.

The photo combo was made to send to a group of friends (read chili addicts) who I'm going to share some of the plants with.

The planting guide for the (first?) batch. Find the Excel template here. I should probably expand it so I can keep better notes (germination time, observations, etc).

It was barely 5 days until the first seeds were germinating. This shot is at the 3 week mark.

My favorite shot. Watching seeds / plants grow never loses its majick.

More updates as my chilidren develop

Cheers, Antony.

I take it they are LED lights versus HID ?

Certainly seems to be some good interest in LED lighting recently. I'm very interested in the cost savings that LED can provide, but since it only seems to produce red and blue versus the entire spectrum, I'm not so sure if I want to go ahead with it now.

Lots of articles on the net where people claim that plants need more than just blue and red light spectrum, I spose time will tell.

Yet to receive my first electricity bill from my grow tent. I've packed a suitcase ready anyway in case the missus decides to throw me out ;)

No, 2 x 36W fluoros (GroLux by Sylvania) in a standard commercial ceiling reflector (from a dumpster).

The light output is slightly pinkish and the digital camera is quite sensitive to it (not sure what the UV content of these lamps is).

Hmm, interesting. I have the "Eco-Lux" lights that are more purple but are supposed to be full-range bulbs. Perhaps just more blue wavelengths eh?
