Quick question...Chocolates-how do you tell when they are ready?

What Judy said. As soon as mine look like this I pick them.

When i grow a variety for the first time I usually let the very first pods over ripen to see all the possible color transitions. They eventually become soft and go bad as Judy suggested. When you know the exact final color it's easy to harvest them at the right time.

To reduce the frequency of picking them, I wait until many are completely dark brown and while picking, also pull any that are as near that as what MeatHead pictured.  Sometimes the sneaky lil bassturds are greener on the back where I couldn't see it but they still are ripe enough to finish up inside at room temperature.
