seeds Dried pod seeds

I recently purchased some seeds + dry pods. It was mentioned I shouldnt try using the dried pod seeds for growing. Why is this?

All depends on how it got dried. Lo temperature drying = good chance of germination. The higher the temp for drying lessens the chance of germination. If that's all you got then try anyways. You really won't know unless you do.

+1 that temperature is key. I dry my pods at the lowest setting on the dehydrator, which is 90F. It takes a few days at this temp, but it keeps the seeds viable. Commercially-sold dried pods are usually dried at a much higher temperature - often enough to cook the seeds. However, note the "usually" part - as noted above, give it a try and see what happens, just don't have high expectations.

Thanks for the info. So basically if the heat was to high the seeds are basically destroyed. Is that a 100% guarantee?

Im going to try germinate them and see but I assume if none germinate it was a high temperature.

Is there any kind of visual that would depict high drying? I see the 1 dried pod seems to have rotten a little so that kinda makes me think it wasnt a high temperature.

On a side note can the drying process cause the chilli to go "bad" and if I ate it would it cause my gut to go "bad"?  I see some pods have black spots on them.

You know how if a guy wears briefs for too long his little Colonel starts firing blanks?  Reproductive DNA just doesn't like getting all hot and bothered.

Same deal with seeds.

Doesn't mean it's not fun to take those seeds and fire them into some moist dirt in a pretty little cup though, even if you're just gonna throw it away when you're done.
Who's a dirty little cup?  Yeah, that's right, not good for holding anything except beer and seed, are y....  Sorry, excuse me.

Seeds dried at higher heat tend to be a darker yellowish hue but there's no chart or anything that you could use to tell you what is dead.  The best answer is that if a grow is important to you, buy some known good seed from a trusted seller.  It may be an initial expense but once you get going you will have more seed than you know what to do with.
