Anyone tried making your own basket/sponge setup for the aero garden?

Like the tittle says. Looking for ideas on creating my own home made baskets/sponge combo. Just got my hands on a used ag but it came with no baskets or sponges. Looking for alternatives. Thanks !
 
Dollar store sponges.
No basket needed if you cut them large.
When cut and wet, use a pencil to poke a hole all the way through.
Stick your seeds 1/8 inch into the hole.
 
Fat "poofy" sponges work best, but not the ones with the huge pores.

none left from last batch, so no pix.
Simple.
Cut slightly larger than the hole when wet, exactly the same size when dry.
Cut in a cone shape, or cut round and shape after.
$5 at a dollar store will give you more than enough to practice on.
 
Note they don't work quite as well as the originals.

Gin-u-wine less than $50 set you up for years, if not using the styrofoam seed starter.
 
Don't use their nutes.
 
Make sure to pull the foam filter on the pump and clean it out---especially on used AG's, and I do it after every use before I put it away.
 
Oh, and a couple toothpicks in each sponge (across the top through the sponge) saves you from unwanted sponge fishing.
