Pest-repelling plants

Valo said:
Hi all,

I was recently shown this list - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pest-repelling_plants

Just wondering if anyone here uses this method for keeping away bugs? and if so, how well does it work?

Would like to do things naturally where possible :)

Thanks!

I have for years, and it works pretty well for me. I also practice crop rotation as much as I can with the small size of my garden plot, and I plant things that attract beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings... cilantro, basil and "lemon gem" marigolds for example. I'll use organic sprays as a last resort if any infestations get too bad... like Dipel for hornworms, Spinosad for leaf-chewing insects, and the nuclear option for piercing and sucking insects is Pyrethrins. That last I avoid if at all possible because it's a non-specific contact poison that affects friendlies and pollinators too, but at least it's of short duration, and leaves no toxic residues.

     Hope this helps :)

I have had some success this year with Citronella plants and will be getting more next year. I still get Leaf Miners in late season, but way down on all other pests this year.

Thanks for your replies!
