outdoors Treasure hunters

One of my many hobbies include metal detecting and I've been doing it for about 6 years now. I'm not looking to get rich or anything, I just love getting outdoors and digging up the earth. 99% of what I find is trash but thats ok because every once in a while I come upon something interesting. My best finds have been gold, silver coins, old tokens, pre civil war buttons, mini balls and vintage condom tins . Some have even been displayed at the community college history exhibit. Just wondering if anyone here shares the same passion for history and metal detecting.

Wow sounds like you gave it away. I recently sold my minelab etrac but I got almost what I paid. I decided to go back with Tesoro brand and I couldn’t be happier. You probably had some sweet spots there in SC, especially being by the coast.

Even if find nothing, I guess is an enjoying day at the end, right? This "virus" didn't bite me yet, but have to admit, I was thinking about this several times. Dunno how expensive is a metal detector, but, well, could try this one day....

Yes even when I find nothing it is still a good day because I got out of the house and got some good exercise. I see your from Romania and I couldn't even imagine what treasures you could find. For a serious metal detector you can expect to pay at least $500 in the US and that is for a mid range which could hang with the high end if you know how to use it.

I did a quick search, and found the Tesoro Compadre detector (among others) at a nice price, and with many excellent reviews. Didn't found for sale here in Romania... And, as I see on some forums, it looks I need to register to the police, and get a paper, that I am allowed to posess a metal detector.

For sure can find coins, more or less old, and for sure things from different wars (WW I, WW II, ...). And probably many other interesting things. For sure mountains of garbage too... But I saw a 24y. old guy found some old things, almost 2000 years old. Of course the law will not let you keep anything you find (not to mention that the law is so to say stupid, for example you need to fill a request to be authorized to own a detector, but you need to fill the name, serial number, and others in that request - how can I fill these for a detector I WILL own? - it means I must already have it in order to fill these, so I need to fill a request and ask for permission to own a thing I already own...).

In some places in Europe I bet you could find a few un exploded Nazi bombs and land mines.
Get some bang for your bucks....
Not only Nazi. For a while Romania fought together with Germany, and Allies bombed some places, especially oil refineries. After that Romania changed the side and fought against Nazis.
But no matter who's bombs, I need no one. Maybe Cherry Bomb, or some Hand Grenade, as long as the name is related to a pepper :)

Metal detecting is fun,but you have to be careful when doing it.The biggest thing is to make sure you stay with in the laws. Some states have rules if something is over 99 years old you cannot keep it.They get really crazy with stuff like that.I use to do a lot myself, but have some what given it up for awhile.
You never know what your'll find in the ground.I knew some guys really in it and were friends with the
guys on diggers.KC and the other guy.I guess you could say I met and hung with some hard hitters in treasure hunters. These guys would show some killer finds. If someone wants to do good at it,my best advice to them would be show nobody your spots and show nothing to anyone with a great value.

Was big into for many years and love history! Just sold my teknetics G2 for 200 bucks to pay off my heads I had done on my 78 Cj 7 is great for getting to hard to reach places.

Pics of the CJ.?  Loves me that model.  I had two Jeeps from the 90s but my dream is to own a completely rebuilt CJ.

Your absolutely right pepperguy, I had to get off the md forum for that reason. When shit got serious I had to quit talking about it online. There was a couple of instances where some guys came and trashed some of my spots because I revealed too much. Then they went on to say me and my buddy were jerks because we refused to share anymore info and didnt wanna hunt with them anymore. We put in alot of time and effort doing research and geting permission and to have someone come without permission and leave the place looking like a minefield, that really grinded my gears.

The compadre is an excellent entry level machine. This machine excells where others fail. Its ability to separate targets is amazing. I have one and love it, but if your looking for depth I would go with another detector with a bigger coil.

I feel you there Grass Snake about people trashing spots, they like to throw BB's out so people with entrylevel machines cannot tune them out.Your 100% right about doing research and getting permission, when I left a dig site it was cleaner than before I got there. No holes left, looked untouched.I would cut plugs out of the grass and put the dirt on a tarp. Carry water to put on the grass after putting it back.I agree with you on the bigger coil.I have hunted with Whites,Tesoro,Bounty Hunter,T2 which at the time they were still working on it and a few more types. The most imported things is to remember to have fun.
When I started people out metal detecting, they would go around a play dig site.I would put all types of stuff in the ground for them to ping in on.One good thing about it is you can also use it to tune your own machine in too.I also like to ping in on silver coins 1964 and older.Just to see how they read and hit on it.One more note of advice is put thing you will need in a bag, such as battery, rope, first aid kit, tape, water, bug spray, gum and what ever you think you'll need.

There's supposed to be a single cave here filled with silver veins and a silver 'pool' in the floor. Mentioned twice in the 1800's. Not going to find it with a metal detector though.
I'm sure there is someone out there right now in search of this legendary cave. I always wanted to hit up the ski lifts in Colorado. I imagine you can find some rings that fell off when people were taking off their gloves.

A friend I knew lived very close to Oak St beach in Chicago.  He'd go out to the beach very very (like 4:30-5am) early on weekend mornings and sweep the beaches.  Found all kinds of stuff - lots of junk but some very nice jewelry once in a while.  Good exercise and nice to be outside even if you get skunked.  Last I heard the park police had chased him out.

Gotta keep a look out for those park police. Luckily I've never been ran out of a place but I have been approached by police on many occasions but they're usually just looking for coversation.

There is a guy called Chicago Ron that does good out there in Chicago. He has a bunch of videos on youtube and he finds a ridiculous amount of gold and silver. Not sure if its real or not. I think he got a show on the discovery.

I would just love to find the Lost Dutchman mine.Man all that gold, but I think it is now in the park system. The world may never know.
I wouldn't, if you find it you'll probably die a horrible death. The thundergods protect that area and you don't wanna f**k with them.
