For Any Wax Lovers!

I wish I still had a reason to pick one of these up ...

As far as I'm concerned DRC stands for Domain Romanee Conti. lol

Wine, right? Domaine de la Romanée-Conti ...

I don't drink wine, myself, but am familiar w/ the region - a programmer friend (online friend) lives nearby ...

Does this contraption only record live audio onto vinyl? Or does it also dub digital source audio? The former seems like a great idea. The latter, not so much.

Would pair nicely w/ a Zoom ...

Since it plays, and has what looks to be a nice sturdy direct-drive type system (like Technics 1200's, for example, which are DC'd ... booo!), you could duplicate wax ... that alone, is cool as hell ...

The killer add-on would be the reader + image-file format for archival and reproduction. 3D printers spring to life when you add a 3D scanner.

The question is whether there would be more or less distortion and/or "loss" otherswise from reading the grooving w/ a laser or whatever, versus to AD/DA conversions ...

I'm inclined to believe you would get a more accurate reproduction of the original article if you recorded the contour of the physical medium and then cut a new blank to it, as laser/light is REALLY well controlled and very accurate.

AD/DA conversion is probably somewhat of a programming/hardware marvel, but it's probably still just a shit abstraction for reproduction comparatively ...

That's my hypothesis on the thing, anyways ...

I bet they create a scanner to go w/ it, for reproduction, and then it's gold ... I'd *LOVE* to be able to make copies of some of my friends jazz collection, and they'd *LOVE* to know they were making an archival copy with as good an original plate as possible ... having your wax image stored for eternity - game changing ...

Pretty cool device.

you can record the grooves and all that jazz with a scanner? thats cool.

how do you reproduce the scan? lasers or some jazz like that? arent grooves in records supposed to be a special v shape? can lasers cut v shaped grooves?

I was suggesting the addition of a reader - which I didn't even see them mention ... it's probably a mechanical cutter, I didn't look closely ... I can't look closely - the more I look, the more tempted I'll be =)

As for angling a laser - you'd probably do two passes, w/ the head tilted in either direction ...

I don't think we have a way to bend laser beams in any appreciable way (yet) ... reminds me of bullets in Wanted, LOL ...

yea did not mean to suggest that that thing uses lasers.

i think thats beyond the financing abilities of some kick starter campaign.

but they DO have scanners to record from existing vinyl records? that exists? as does the ability to reproduce the record that was recorded? lasers or otherwise.

im curious, as its all so interesting.

im betting that if one could scan a record, with good resolution, one could then 'fix' little pops and scratches here and there with some fairly trivial interpolating methods.

or perhaps record several records, ideally from the same master( is that even possible?), and correct errors that way.

I practically guarantee the slot where the microscope is, will become the place where a scanner/reader can be ... which they'll probably make for sale as an additional item that you can purchase, right before the thing ships (eventually, if ever) ...

I've gotten a pretty good feel for how people orchestrate Kickstarter campaigns this past year, at least in the electronics category ...

We'll see, definitely cool though ...

You can tell they mean business ... Pelican cases are the shit, it's waterproof, and they are clearly building a platform that they intend to be built upon (to me, anyways) ...

"100% of funds raised will be used on infrastructure purchases and expanding the features of The DRC."

and ...

"It will also facilitate extra functions that can be added at the same price (did somebody say integrated digital analysis, heater element or... ?!)."

ok so i meant to ask if there are scanners on the market in general, not if this thing cant at some point scan a record.

do other companies, regardless of the cost, produce record scanning equipment? does that technology exist?
