help me select the best superhots

Hi.

I'm new here, and I'm looking for advice on the best super hots for me to plant.  This might go fairly long, since I never know when to shut up. So the tldr is "What four  superhots would be the best for a newbie grower, to use mostly for making powder?"

A little about my situation.  I've only grown peppers for 2 years. First year was jalapenos with a few habaneros. This year was all habaneros.  I eat them in some form, at praticaly every meal. So I run out quick, then have to pay for more to get through. So I figured if I grew all superhots I would have the heat taken care of for the year, I would only need to buy some cheaper  peppers for bulk.

With habeneros I just cut them up, and throw them in what I'm making.  But I'm suspecting portion controll will be more important with the hottest stuff. So I'm leaning towards turning all of the superhots into powder(maybe even cut down a bit with cayenne).   Then I should have less risk of  biting into a full piece of hell ;)

I have space for about 24 plants.(could steal more room from wifes flower beds if I really needed to).  So I'm planning on ordering 10 each of 4 different varieties.  Then planting the best 6 of each that come up.

I think I'm ordering from buckeye pepper company, because they have good selection, are reasonably priced, and are close to me. Currently in cart I have carolina reaper, 7 pot douglah, trinidad moruga scorpion yellow, and naga morich. I want the reaper for sure(just to say I have the hottest :) )  The others I just chose to get some color variation, and the naga because I read that they usualy had a bigger yield than most others.

14 of my plants will get full sun, but 10 get shaded at around 2pm in summer.  The habaneros there were smaller than the others, but still gave a decent yield. So if any superhots require less sun than the others, please inform.

So does anyone have suggestion on the best  4 superhots, either for flavor, yield, ease of growing, etc?  They don't all have to be at top of list for heat, but do need to at least be hotter than a habanero. Unless there is a super flavorful lesser pepper that would make a good powder to mix with the others.

Is making powder the best way to go with these?

I've probably got more questions. But this is so long, I better stop now ;)

Thanks!

Judy is a member here and is very knowledgeable about what she sells. My superhot experience is very limited but I'm starting some seeds from her that will help to expand my knowledge.

Boc( bhut orange copenhagen)
Brown moruga
Brain strain(red)
7 pot white

Maybe the question should be "If you could only grow four?" And of course you would have to factor in AVAILIBILITY.

After reviewing buckeye peppers' inventory, I would have to say that my personal favorite chinenses that they offer are:

Trinidad Scorpion Yellow- great flavor and poduction* (typo of production* but I let it stck because it seems appropriate), aesthetically pleasing pods, 2 years running earliest ripe chinense, heat intensity: technically a super hot but almost not...

Trinidad Scorpion Butch T- high production, aesthetically pleasing pods, very strong growth (healthy and resistant), cherry popsicle/strawberry aromatics, heat level: scalding, pounding deep burn... much pain.

7 pot Douglah- beautiful pods, high production (highest)

7 pot Bubblegum- novelty of bleeding calyx, excellent flavor, very high searing burn.

Carolina Reaper- coolest looking pods, good flavor, heat level: very high (but for me the ButchT has a more painful burn subjectively.)

Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion- second coolest looking pods, lovely smell and flavor, high searing burn.

Bhut Jolokia Caramel-aesthetically pleasing pods, decent heat, high production.

SB7J- gnarly looking pods, high heat, great flavor.

Mustard habanero- best flavor (ive described the sauteing smell of this pepper as sweet and sugary like caramalized peaches.. this partially translates into the flavor as well.) Aesthetically pleasing pods sometimes reaching rougly the size of a tennisball.  (drawback: slow ripening)

I am growing all of these, but if I could only choose 4 I would go with the Yellow Scorpion, Carolina Reaper, 7 pot Douglah, and Mustard Hab.

You might want to consider adding a Fatalii to the mix. The heat seems way hotter than the Scoville rating suggests. They are prolific and early producers too.

I would say: pick different colors to have all the different shades of taste that every kind carries on.

Brown: yeah, you can stay with the Douglah 7 Pod, excellent flavour, prolific plants, hot as hell!!!
Honorable mentions: 7 Pot Brown, Brown Moruga, Chocolate Scorpion, Chocolate Bhut Jolokia

Red: the Reaper is the easy way, you'll have a hell of a strain and you can say that you have the hottest one!
Honorable mentions: Moruga Scorpion, Naga Morich, 7 Pod Jonah, 7 Pod Primo, Brainstrain, Barrackpore

Yellow: i'd go either with the Yelow Moruga or Yellow Brainstrain, nice citrusy flavour, killer heat, good plants!
Honorable mentions: Yellow Douglah, Yellow Primo

Then you can pick a Caramel, a Mustard, a Peach, a White or an orange one!
I'm trying Caramel Moruga, 7 Pod and Bhut Jolokia this next year!

As for the vendors, Buckeye is a good choice, and Pepperlover is too!

I would grow pretty much the same as the other members here suggested,I would put the Moruga's just under the heat of the reaper, the Brown or chocolate moruga is quite tasty but the heat quickly removes most of the flavor when eaten raw and it really turns on the pain.  I dry most of my super hots after removing the seeds for powders, the seeds can add a woody and some what bitter taste to your powders.  I also freeze a few bags of ripe pods to use for sauces and jelly, for the jelly's I will chip up several different colored frozen pods so that the jelly has lots of color to it, I do the same when I use fresh pods for jelly.
The main thing is finding varieties that you like, that grows and produces well in your time zone, Some super hots take forever to mature and produce ripe pods so you need to think about that also. Judy at pepperlovers.com is a great vendor that has a wide variety of peppers and is one of the best in my book.

very descriptive. Inspired me to try and sprout a few. Thank you for this.

Primos are hotter than reapers and taste way better too. Reapers are rather plain tasting.
Red Brain Strains from Cappy are hotter than scorpions, and also taste much better.
For chocolate, I've tried most of them, but Douglahs have a unique taste that you just don't get with chocolate scorpions or bhuts.
For yellows, I'd go for yellow brains, mainly for the extra heat. Fataliis have a better yellow taste but are half the heat. I think I would go for the Fatalii.
That would be my 4, but if you want 4 different colors, skip the brain and add Jay's peach ghost scorpion for powder. This one, to me, is better in powder form than it is fresh.

I also like the primos a lot

7 pod burgundy, IMHO, are great peppers all around.....solid heat, fairly prolific and good ripening for me, excellent flavor....my favorite grow all around

i like devil's tongue just a little better than fatali.....but to each his own

Thanks for all the help. Every person that post, I think YES! that's the perfect pepper, I'll order that. Then I read the next post and change my mind ;)

If I could grow more varieties, but less plants each it would solve that problem. But buckeye only sells 10 seeds for 6$.  So I wouldn't want to buy a ton of variety.

So I would like some info about pepperlover.com. It doesn't list anywhere how many of each seed you get. So for example reaper is 4$. So If that is for just 1 it would be 40$ for the 10 I get for 6$ at buckeye.

How about the collections. That would be my main reason for buying from her. . for example her 7 pod extreme pack.  Its 30$ for 13 varieties. If its only 1 seed each that is way expensive, if 4 or 5 each variety would be fine.

I've never grown from seed before, so I would want at least a few of each variety just to feel confident in getting 1 of each plant.

Also most of the good collections say notify me. Is she likely to get back in stock in the next few weeks, or am I too late for this season on them?

You can contact her but i don't think, at this point of the year, that she's having back the ones that are out of stock.

As for the n° of seeds, you get a minimum of 20-25 per package!

You can have seeds from both vendors and give them a try, you will not be disappointed with each of them!

+1 for 7 pot burgundy. I will never not grow that pepper.

Jays Peach Ghost Scorp has definitely been topping my list so far. Damn sweet..................

So I would pick
Jays Peach Ghost Scorp
Yellow 7-Pod
7-Pod Jonah
7-Pod Primo

I'm led to believe the SB7J has an amazing flavour so could be an interesting one too

Just a heads up on drying your peppers and deseeding them.Do it outside are your wife might get somewhat mad at you.I gas my whole house when I deseeded a bunch of peppers.I was pissed at my own self and I have no wife.Sure, wish the Ex was downwind of it.

Yes. I know all about that. If my wife ever divorces me, peppers will defiantly be mentioned in court.  We just had an incident last week. I very carefully added an extract to my chile. The next day my wife had it all over her face and nose. I swear I didn't spill any, but the circumstantial evidence was pretty damning :)
I just placed my order. I was looking for 4 varieties. I ended up getting 18! SInce pepperlover.com is known to give allot of freebies, I could end up with 24 varieties, with only room for 24 plants. And I definitely want more than 1 of some of them.  I have no idea where I'm planting them all, but I expect my wife's flowers might suffer from an unexplained weed-eater accident

I tried to order using the information from this thread but allot of the ones I wanted were out of stock. Specifically jays peach ghost/scorpion, 7pod burgundy, and sb7j caught my attention but weren't available.

I ended up with way to many reds. .But that is what was in stock. Its mostly just an  aesthetic issue anyway.

For those interested, I ended with

Carolina Reaper

Trinidad Scorpion Moruga (Yellow)

Trinidad Douglah

White Fatalii
Yellow Fatalii

(MOA) Scotch Bonnet

7 pod red hell collection

original, brain, barrack, primo, jonah

 ultimate bhut collection

Red Bhut Jolokia
Brown Bhut Jolokia
Yellow Bhut Jolokia
Peach Bhut Jolokia
Indian Carbon Jolokia
White Jolokia
Bih Jolokias
