seeds Seed germination?

Hi all... So I have a question about germinating my pepper seeds. Is it OK to use a light to keep the soil warm?  I don't have a heat mat so that's out of the question... Any tips for keeping the soil warm or germinating the seeds? I am trying to sprout Bhut Jolokia, Caribbean Blend, and a mini bell pepper for the fun of it.

sure , but if you can you can get heat mat at menards really cheap right now . or a heat pad on low make sure its a 24 pad . this really helps quicken germination

You should do a search in "growing hot peppers" section labeled "germination". There are TONS of archived information on this forum.

Near a light, on top of an older fridge, on a stereo speaker, on the back of an old PC video monitor…… ANY place that is warm in the right temperature zone. I may try some by the vent in my bathroom as that seems to be the most consistently warm room of my house. When germinating small quantities I usually put them on top of the fridge. Works every time.

Curious when you say small quantities are you talking about super hots. Mine have been in my propagator for like two weeks and just checked them yesterday and most on the bottom were a red or pink color. But none sprouted. They are in plastic zip bags and moist paper towel. I have over thirty varieties I'm trying to sprout but I'm assuming it might be too hot? Thermostat reads 85 in 65 out. Anyone ever have this happen to there seeds?
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I had success with my bell peppers so I must be doing something right. Another question, I know they say habs need calcium, whats a good way to get that? I got some bone meal is this sufficient. 
 
All of the above suggestions are great if you have only a small number of seeds you want to germinate.
If you have several flats filled with seeds to germinate, has anyone ever used an electric bed warmer pad or and electric blanket?
 
If you are concerned about water or moister, the electric bed pad or electric blanket could be covered with plastic trash bags.
 
I have not used this method, since this is going to be my first year growing from seeds, but for those that want to start several flats of seeds at once,
this should work.... YES / NO / MAYBE  ???
 
Whilstat the germination stage it is probably best not to over think it, a few basics to remember: keep the soil moist not dry or drenched, and maintain temperatures between 18 and 28 degrees celcius standard household temperature s for most of us I would assume. But THE most important thing to remember whilst at the germination stage is (in my opinion) is PATIENCE.

Afterwards you will reap the rewards. Best of luck with your season, may your harvests be plentiful:)
 
Thank you Rory... Trying to do it right this year, but sometimes simple is always best. The box I have them in stays a constant 80 degrees fahrenheit which seems to be the sweet spot. Just noticed I had some sprouts so that did not take long at all! 
 
My seeds have not behaved as expected at all so far. My scorpions and ghosts have mostly all germinated 4 days in, but the jalapeno seeds I expected to germinate quickly haven't. For the varieties that haven't germinated at all (3 total) I started a few using the paper towel bag method to see if they will germinate faster. Knowing my luck they'll all germinate and I'll have 9 of each variety to deal with, which I guess isn't so bad now that I think about it.
