seacowboy 2015

Here goes another year of learning, experimenting and with a bit of luck more success than years past.  Last year proved to give some excellent yields however they started later than I had hoped, and will try and remedy that this year by getting started a bit earlier. As with most of us chileheads we are overwhelmed with the huge numbers in varieties available to us with more coming out each season, while I do plan to expand the number of varieties I grow this year from last, I have weeded out some (unfortunately only a few) to skip this year.  I will be expanding my secondary grow area down at my hunt camp, last year I only planted about 35 plants there, this year I am shooting for about 150 plants.  For the grow here at the house I am going to make the best attempt I can at expanding my grow in pubes all in containers with a sun shade to help keep them protected in our warmer months.  The in ground grow will be decreased to allow for easier tending and harvesting, yes the field of green was nice, but a royal pain in the ass to crawl through to pick peppers and check plants.

Soil prep started at the end of last season with my first go at a winter cover crop, I used a mix of oats, beans, rye, and beets.  They came up good, and will hopefully come back to life as the temperature rises come spring.  The container soil will be recycled and replenished with a mix of all organic nutrients that seemed to do well for me last season.

Seeds went into the new AeroGarden Ultra LED just now.

The wait now begins.

Thanks fellas. It was unintentional but not owning up to making the mistake of taking the and having them sold for probably $5 at his church yard sale really chaps my ass. He just grabbed stuff from storage room without paying any attention to labels of PEPPER SEEDS, and GARDEN AND FLOWER SEEDS on each.

Anyhow things are going pretty good with the potted plants at the house with most the plants having several pods, tons of flowers and great growth. Jigsaw is looking a little rough with some bronze coloring on underside of a few leaves.

Pubes are slap covered with flowers, with a handful that stuck and will hopefully stay attached. See if you can spot a couple tiny things in pic besides the obvious manzano flower and fat finger.

And here's the group shots and a close up of a future arse burner.

No pics from the hunt camp garden but I don't think there will be much to look at except mainly grass and weeds.

Hey Jason, Your plants at the house in the big 20-30 gallon containers have really taken off over the last month, happy to see those taking off for you and I hope they are some of you prized plants to collect some more seed from.  Don't worry I have Tupperware containers of seed I will never grow that you welcome to just for the asking.  I also have some of your Chocolate Bubblegum seeds from you I did not grow this year that I will gladly return to the rightful owner.  What types are you specifically looking for, or if you don't mind I'll send the whole lot and what you don't use you can pass it on.

Damn cappy that's a helluva offer there, I'd be happy to try and make a train out of it and that's a huge pay it forward. Just let me know when you send it and be on the lookout. I have a few of the Chocolate Bubblegum going and will be isolating several flowers tomorrow, just hope the temps over the weekend don't cause them to drop. Keep those seeds I sent you just in case you change your mind later on those

Also thanks for the unexpected box, got home last night but didn't get into the mail pile till this morning. Going to have tacos tonight with some black bean soup and your pods will be perfect to bring some heat.

The last month they did take off, happy to say it was the old leave it the fahq alone care they received. Only complaint though about those fabric pots is their lack of longevity. Bought them last year and at least half have lost at least 1 handle then 6 have torn down the side when being moved, but they work

Stopped by the hunt camp garden on the way back from checking out VCU with my step son yesterday. Lost a few more plants but most of the others have finally kicked into gear and put on some serious growth, a few have lots of pods but still have awhile before their ripe.

1 lost row

Long double row, upper half is doing good but lost majority of the lower half.

Few late additions are doing good, pulled a few yellow cayenne's from the one on the end.

The rest of the garden is doing good. Picked about 100 yellow beets and few dozen maters, sweet corn still have awhile before their ready and the taters will be ready around Labor day.

Heathsville. It's down on the Northern Neck. The deer actually leave it alone, the mow the farmers soy beans down surrounding us. 1 farmer has me and a few others on his kill permit to help out on his places to lower the numbers some but still has to replant a few fields every year.

Finally got a few to pick! Not the mother load or anything but not to bad for 6 plants just started give ripe pods. My pubes have a lot pods hanging but nothing ripe yet. Unfortunately their getting BER or some other affliction going on with the Coast Rican Red's, they start to turn and then rot. No clue as to why or how to fix it. Will home for most of the rest of the season awaiting my daughter to born and spending time with Momma and her once that great comes.

Also check out the giveaway I just put up in The Fun Zone.

Hey there buddy!

Glad to see your garden is still kicking. Calmag as a foilar spray (1/2 strength) twice a week at dawn or dusk will help BER.

Scott

Thanks Scott. I will mix some up now. I have been giving them some in a soil drench every 10 days or so but guess it wasn't enough.

Also great to see you back!

I tried the soil drench method, it didn't help. The foilar worked perfect. Last year, I had just 1 fruit that had BER. This year due to my being absent we lost 90% of our tomato crop to BER.

Peppers do better than the toms here regarding BER.
