Wild Game or Fish

If this exists the super search feature failed to direct me...

I would love everyone to post plates of food from something they caught or killed hunting.

First up....ugly plate but a southern classic, fried venison and onions...I like to put pepper powder in the breading.

Now you're throwing out your hip.................

I went up to the mountains this morning in search of some mountain quail. Once again, I didn't manage to kick up any birds but I at least got to experience some of mother natures finest and get in a nice hike while I was at it. I'm very fortunate to live in a location that is 30 minutes from the mountains, 1 hour from the desert and 1 hour from the beach. I'm quite tired but it was a nice day.

You're fortunate to be where you are. I'd kill to be an hour from a desert. But having mountains (Real ones, the Iron Range doesn't count.) so close would put me over the edge!
Are those ponderosa pines in your first pic?

Not sure. I can point out a few native plants in our national forest but I'm not too familiar with them. We do have a lot of ponderosas in our mountains though.

Wow, that's beautiful! The terrain reminds me a lot of Norther New Mexico. I always had the best luck with quail in Southern NM around all of the mesquite bushes, in the desert Rocky Mountain terrain.

We have 3 kinds of quail in california. I went looking for gambels quail in the mojave desert a couple weeks ago (which I think is what they have in new mexico). Mountain quail are the largest of the 3 and can only be found in higher elevations of the mountains. The third is valley quail (california quail) and they're usually in the lower elevation hill and mountain areas. I've been to spots that have both valley and mountain quail which is pretty cool. All 3 use to be very prominent but our drought really put a dent in their populations and it's gonna be a while before they fully recover.

Finally dug deep into my ground elk, made two batches of summer sausage to break in the new stuffer. Each batch got 26lbs of elk and 1lb of ground bacon for a little bit of fat plus my grampas secret spice blend. Learned after the fact that they need to go into an ice bath coming out of the smoker so they don't shrivel, but that's purely cosmetic and the sausage came out amazing.
