pics My first harvest....EVER!

Yesterday I picked two peppers. A cayenne and a thai. This was a big deal for me. I have never grown peppers before and didn't know what to expect with this experiment. I have dutifully checked on my dozen plants every night with my trusty pepper growing assistant (my two and a half year old son). When I went outside two nights ago and began pulling back a few leaves to check on progress I couldn't believe my eyes. Somehow this cayenne pod had grown to maturity unbeknownst to me. I picked that one and found one more pod that I think was ready on a nearby thai plant. It is a very small harvest, but it was one that filled me with pride and joy. My son carried the pods into the house to show his mom our accomplishment. I love peppers, but I think my favorite thing about this endeavor has been the excitement that Mason feels when we go outside every night to "check the peppers".

PS. I did take some pictures and they will follow as soon as I upload them. Maybe by then I will have an actual harvest of size. There are a lot of peppers on these plants and should be ready in the next week.

I ate the thai whole yesterday and am letting the cayenne ripen for another day or two before I eat it. I am also growing jalapenos, poblanos, and habaneros, I plan on eating the first one of each raw. (except maybe the poblano)

The thai wasn't as hot as I expected. I may have picked it a couple of days early. The cayenne is about normal. I just took a big bite right now. Only right that I eat my actual first pepper on my birthday right.

:bday::cheers::beer: JayT !!!

the first pods of the season are always a little timid...they seem to get hotter & tastier as the season goes on.

Its a great start to a new year

:cheers:

its a joy isn't it getting those first peppers..it does fill you with pride.nice to see your sons enjoying it to and happy birthday jay :):bday:

Happy Birthday Jay! and great for you getting your son involved in growing..it starts at an early age...like teach a man to fish. Teach a child to garden and he can feed him/herself. Sure lots worse things out there than playing in the dirt.

Great news you got to taste your first. As other people have said, the early season peppers are usually a bit timid. The Cayennes and Thai are great producers and both dry really well.

While harvesting some ripe peppers from my Cayenne the other day I accidentally broke off two green peppers...shock horror. I decided to eat them as I had never eaten a green Cayenne and they were really tasty. They tasted a bit like snow peas with a delayed heat.

Congrats on your harvest your right about how it feels when you harvest your first ones. Your of to a good start continued success.Looking forward to the pictures.

congrats to you on the harvest & the fact your kid also likes to help you with the chiles. soon you'll have plenty of chiles to harvest from the plants & you'll have to let your help carry a little bucket.& happy B-day.

Thanks guys. I think the first real harvest will be sometime this week. To answer some questions, no Mason won't eat the peppers yet. He is very picky about what he eats right now. I'll work on it. He does the watering though. He goes and gets the water can and takes it to the kitchen for me to fill it in the sink. Then I carry it outside and he waters the peppers. He even has his official "pepper watering hat". It started out as a joke one day when I told him to get his cowboy hat and come help me water.

Grats on the first harvest, and that's really cool that you are getting your boy involved in the gardening at an early age. Those sort of things lay down memories that you will treasure forever.
