HAJ's cross section

Ok, new GLOG is up

Grow list updated ...

Main focus here is on my work with crosses. So first a list of what I managed to cross this far, and a status:
  • HAJ12D, Chocolate Habanero X GRIF 9293. Wanted to make a medium hot chocolate chinense. Had 12 F2s, and 4 F3s from the best F2. But have since realised that medium chinense's are hard to come by. Either they are hot, or they are not !
Current status: No further growing of this cross.
  • HAJ13A, Aji Lemon Drop X Choclate Habanero. This was most for the fun of it, but if I could get a choclate coloured aji, it would be great. F1 is really good, but have had next to no luck with F2s. Will try some more this season.
2015: Back crossed with Aji Lemon Drop, HAJ13A XB.
Current status: F1s and F2s growing.
  • HAJ13B, Aji Benito X Blondie. Aim was to have a white stuffable baccatum. Have found 2 good candidate's among the F2s. One is maybe even more white than Blondie but same shape, the other is a round with peach colour. First peach baccatum I've seen
2015: Selected F3s: #1 Long white and wrinkled. #2 Round white.
#1, current status: Sown, ready to flower.
    #2, current status: podding up.
  • HAJ13C, Yellow Habanero (or something like that) X Trinidad Perfume. Aim was again to have a medium hot chinense. F1 is quite nice and has some big pods. Due to my guess that a medium hot chinense may not be achivable from crossing a mild and a hot chinense.
Current status: this cross is shelved (for now).
  • HAJ13D, mild peach chinense X Pimenta de Neyde. Aim is a peach and purple chili with the good taste of the mother. Have grown 10 F2s until now. One had a bit of purple, but not enough for me. Another had a very good taste, but no purple. I've sown 20 more F2, and terminated everything but the 2 most purple. Looking forward to see what I'll get from that... Further have just sown 50 F3s from the F2 with very good taste, to see if any recessive purple colour can be found
    2015: Found good F3 candidate
Current status: Will soon get ripe F4 chilies.
  • HAJ14A, CGN 23209 X Cheiro do Norte. Mostly made to pass the time, but maybe I can get some kind of caramel colour  First F1 pod has just set under the LED light.
    Current status: Abandoned.
  • HAJ14E, Ancho Mulato X Hungarian Black. Will I be able to make an Ancho Negro  F1 has just sprouted.
    Current status: Abandoned,
  • HAJ15F, Pinicchio's Nose x Jalapeno Mucho Nacho F1. Can I get the longest Jalapeno ?
    Current status: F2 in progress.
  • HAJ15G, Bishops Crown X Aji Lemon Drop. Aiming at the Lemon Crown.
    Current status: F2 sown.
  • HAJ15H, Aji Omnicolor X Aji Angelo. Trying for a big omnicolor.
Current status: F1 getting close to ripe.
  • HAJ16i, Aji Lemon Drop x HAJ13B #1. Trying for a white bacctum, ripening from dark green.
    Current status: F1 sown.

Other stuff growing:
  • 7 pot Bubblegum
  • Aji Angelo
  • Aji Carjamarca, maybe
  • Aji Lemon Drop
  • Aji Omnicolour
  • Bishops Crown
  • Black Naga
  • Cayenne Long Slim
  • CGN 21500
  • Cheiro do Norte
  • Jalapeno Mucho Nacho F1
  • Peruvian Purple
  • Pimenta de Neyde (though it looks a bit pale...)
  • Pinocchios Nose
  • Mustard Habanero
  • 5 plants from Semillas.de hotmix

Signing up -- particularly interested in keeping an eye (or both) at that baccatum cross. Best of luck!

Thanx Cathy. I'll try to keep the GLOG updated.

Interesting stuff... so the habanero x milds weren't noticeably less hot at all?

Well, most were hot, and a few were mild. Have not found any that were medium. Some differences were there, but they were minor ...

Nice and very interesting crosses, especially the PDN cross.Good luck on your grow!!!

Thanx Florisa  :)

We have finally passed equinox, and the plants love the light.

Not much to show (off) yet.

Ripe chili from HAJ14A F1, CGN 23209 X Cheiro do Norte. Uninteresting taste. May try F2s when I've gotten rid of some other F2's and F3's.

See u next time.

Pods are setting, and greenhouse is getting green

Still only ripe chilies on the plants overwintered indoors. But this time I managed to overwinter 3 plants, all baccatum, in the greenhouse !

Some pictures:
A double flower on Jalapeno Mucho Nacho. Other flowers on the plant look normal:

Ripening pods on the favourite F2 of my PdN cross, HAJ13D:

Another darker F2 of HAJ13D. Have not seen ripe colour yet:

Ancho Mulato X Hungarian Black, HAJ14E F1, pods now full size:
018_zpsw2rbicx9.jpg

Have made a new cross: Pinocchios Nose X Jalapeno Mucho Nacho F1. Now let's see who gets the longest Jalapeno !   :liar:

Finally, my lack of success with HAJ13A, Aji Lemon Drop X Chocolate Habanero F2s, has convinced me to go alternative ways, so I have backcrossed the F1 with Aji Lemon Drop. According to my knowledge, on average half of the plants should still have the gene that can make them turn brown, though it will be reessive, i.e. invisible on next generation. Goal of the cross: a brown baccatum.

Happy growing out there !

A few more pictures:

A new F2 of HAJ13D is ripe, and this time it has the colour mix that I want, unfortunately the taste is not really that good, more F2 and F3 on the way. 2 pictures:
004_zpshykfeldr.jpg

005_zpsivdmvfnk.jpg

Much more F2s and F3s on the way !

Do you feel the heat ?  :onfire:

A few updates.

My Aji Omnicolor turned out to be a Not Omnicolor  :tear: New seeds bought and sown.
004_zpsr1kmw1jd.jpg

New F2's of my PdN cross has ripened. My old favourite in taste in bottom right. F2's from previous post top center, and a very dark/purple bottom right. Unfortunately the new purple F2s does not have that nice taste. F3's from the best tasting F2 getting close.
006_zpsdn9ila3j.jpg

HAJ14E F1, Ancho Mulato X Hunagarian Black, now ripe. Being a F1 it is missing the 3 recessive traits that I want: darkness from the farther, sweetness and brown colour from the mother. F2's in the dirt.
028_zpsy30vvir5.jpg

Mucho, mucho Nacho !
031_zpsfgkhamtc.jpg

And finally a new cross: I got a lemon in the turban !
Or to translate a bit, I have pollinated my Bishops Crown with Aji Lemondrop. Still far from ripe.

Comments and good advise are welcome. Thanx for looking.

Podding up.

My first 7 pot Bubblegum
002_zpss8fhm00s.jpg

I was hoping that backcrossing the Aji Lemondrop X Chocolate Habanero F1 aka HAJ13A with Aji Lemondrop would produce some more seeds. Alas, that was not to be. 2 flowers backcrossed, for a total of 6 seeds looking viable. This far 2 surfaced ...
002_zpsq8zjsfe8.jpg

There is more luck with my PdN cross, HAJ13D. Have got a F3 with the right colour mix and the nice taste
The plant had quite an aphid infection, but I think I got it mostly cleared. Bigger and better pods on the way.

Next post I'll have a comparison of different HAJ13B, Aji Benito X Blondie, F3 pods.

Btw, if you've seen Summer, could you please send it this way

Summer is here ... wait ... ok, now it's gone again. Back to 15 C, 15 m/s and rain  :tear:

Well, luckily most of the chilies are indoors.

As promised, some pod-porn on the Aji Benito X Blondie, a.k.a. HAJ13B cross. These are all F3s.

First, the long white phenotype. Selected for next generation is the pod shown upper-right. They all taste approx. the same, same heat as Blondie, and have same colour, i.e. like Blondie without the purple "sun tan". Pod shape is a bit different from the different plants. I have more plants, but chilies look very much like the ones below.
001_zps5d33voou.jpg

Next phenotype is more round like the Aji Benito. F2 plant gave pale orange/peach chilies like most of the F3 plants, but 2 F3s have given pale yellow/white pods like the phenotype above. That was the original goal with this cross: white, round and stuffable baccatum. 2 pictures first one with a lousy camera which has the selected F3 plant (the white/pale chilies), and a picture with a good camera. Both the white F3s are the same colour, just different light conditions and camera quality.

Even though all were F3s were pale green before ripening, there were still differences:
013_zpsbc2qpvrm.jpg

Last picture of HAJ13B is the family picture from last year featuring, from left to right, parents, the F1 and 3 F2s. The last 2 being the parents of the F3s above.

On to something completly different. My Mucho, mucho Nacho pod is ripe. Here next to a normal Mucho Nacho.

Pinocchio's Nose, with a Bonchi (name of variety as given in shop). The "Nosey" pod on second picture has been pollinated by the mucho, mucho Nacho above !

Harvests highlights:
- To left of the 7pot BBG, is a small pile of the selected HAJ13D F3, PdN cross. Many with aphid damage. Plant is now clean. More shaped chilies on the way.
- Further to the left are 2 pods from the HAJ14E F1, Ancho Mulato X Hungarian Black
- Pods from the selected HAJ13B round phenotype can be seen to the right of the lemon drops above the Bonchis
- Fresh harvest of HAJ13A, Lemon Drop X Chocolate Hab. F1 stright above the Lemon Drops and Pinocchio's Nose. Plant is now in 3rd season.

Soon to come:
- Harvest of the new cross Bishops Crown X Lemon Drop.
- Trying to cross CGN 21500 with Black Naga

Very nice , I love hybrids.

Thanx az1000. I find it very interesting to see what happens when 2 varieties are crossed, and to see the amount variety the cross has.

Great work Haj .... unbelievable amount of patience to produce these hybrids .... what are you most pleased with so far

Thanx Trident. So far my PdN cross, HAJ13D is the best: purple and orange chilies, with hab. heat and good taste. Plant looks beautiful too. The selected F3 plant is (currently) aphid free. More pictures soon.

Stay hot  :D

Hmm, that was a good nap  :)

Well, the end of last year was pretty boring. But here is the update on crosses:

Aji Lemon Drop X HAJ13B long white variety. Cross named HAJ16i. Have just harvested and sown F1 seeds. Aim is to see if I can get a chili that ripens from dark green to white/pale yellow. All the white baccatums I have seen ripen from pale green to pale yellow.

HAJ13B fat white variety X Aji White Fantasy. Not ripe yet. Just for the fun of it, maybe I can get a more funny shape of my white stuffing chili.

NUMEX Twillight X Cayenne Long Slim. Not very far yet. A funny colored cayenne ?!?

Ancho Mulato X Chocolate Habanero. Still pollinating. Never tried annum X chinense before ...

Pinocchio's Nose X Jalapeno Mucho Nacho, F1.5, HAJ15F. a normal looking long red chili. No pictures. F2's are growing but not yet flowering.

Bishops Crown X Aji Lemon Drop F1, HAJ15G. Have just harvested first ripe fruits. Lemon drop heat (approx.), and bishops crown taste. F2 seeds in the dirt. Will I see the F2 fruits this year ?
057_zpswawsmd57.jpg

Aji Omnicolor X Aji Angelo F1, HAJ15H, not ripe yet.

Ancho Mulato X Hungarian Black F2, HAJ14E. Plenty of different shades of brown and black. But not a single chili with decent taste. Terminated.
021_zpsh82zyggi.jpg

Aji Lemon Drop X (Aji Lemon Drop X Chocolate Habanero) F1, HAJ13A XB. As I did not have any luck with the HAJ13A F2s, I back crossed it with the Lemon drop. Have gotten ripe chilis from 2 different plants, both look like Aji Lemon Drop, one with habanero heat, one with Lemon Drop heat. Have F2 plants growing from hot variety, no ripe chilis yet. 2 more of the F1's are having pods, but not ripe yet. Hope is that one of them will have the brown gene. Though it will be recessive and not visible in F1 plants.

Aji Benito X Blondie, long white, F4, HAJ13B #1. First plants about to flower.

Aji Benito X Blondie, fat white, F4, HAJ13B #2. Podding up.

PdN cross, F4, HAJ13D. Podding up, should get ripe soon. Will try to get F5 pods this season too.

First post will be updated with new crosses.

Have fun

A few updates.

The first Aji Omnicolor X Aji Angelo F1, HAJ15H harvested. Picture shows HAJ15H (the big chili) and 2 omnicolor.
