JCW's 2015 Glog

Well, here's to another year. I wanted to downsize from last year, and ended up practically doubling everything.  Started germinating on Jan 22 using paper towel method.  Tried 2 ways, one in cups with the seeds on top, other the way I have always done with the seeds in paper towel in ziploc.  Both have worked, but the paper towel in ziploc seems faster, maybe better temp control there.  So far have about 55 seeds in dirt after 11 days with many of them already popped up and looking happy.

Almost an embarrassing setup compared to many I see on here, but it worked great 10 years ago, and still worked fine last year so I figure no need to change yet.

Will need another rack of lights this year for the increase in volume I have.

Grow list as of today (updated 3/17 hopefully for the last time).  I tried to keep track of the sources, so hopefully I have given proper credit here.

Thank you to all who donated or traded seeds with me this winter to help with this list.  My chiropractor thanks you as well.

Thanks for viewing.

Bangin list, and my names on it!   :D

I got a few pineapple ground cherry tomato sees left if you want to try them. Size of a typical cherry, has a husk like a tomatillo and taste exactly like pineapples. Would make a killer salsa verde

My first year growing them so I couldn't tell you about their growing habits but from what I read they stay low and sprawling.

You weren't kidding about the ocd! Thats one hell of a list. You'll be doing a Scrooge McDuck in peppers instead of money at the end of the season! Best of luck for the season.

I might take you up on that.  I have some Physalis peruviana from Wicked Mike.  Looks similar.  Might be same thing.  I will let you know.  It does look interesting and definitely want to try it if I don't run out of room to start seeds.

Yep.  I told you.  Its rediculous to me at least.  Last year I had about 65 varieties and 110 planted.  This year looking in the 140ish variety range and 170ish planted if all goes well.  Hoping not to really start so many more plants.  Last year I started around 200.  Big difference is last year in april when I was moving up to 3.5" pots and loosing room, I have about about 50+ plants to co workers.  Since most of them seemed to not have a clue even with my directions and help how to grow something, this year, I will just give them the thousands of pods I cannot use.  Half the plants I gave away died from sun scald from not enough hardening off.  Others just threw them in crap dirt.  One guy asked when he would have peppers. His plants were 12" in mid august with not peppers.   Only planning to give away 30 or so this year, hopefully a bunch to a guy that owns a garndening store.  Figure he might be a good friend to have.  Went in there to get a big bag of perlite and noticed he had some morugas and bhuts started.  He might like some of these lesser known ones.

Googling looks to be the same thing. At least same scientific name. http://www.herbgarden.co.za/mountainherb/herbinfo.php?id=337

You will like them, I don't even like tomatoes raw and snagged a few when I tasted them.

Your title is just wicked for this thread! I have been laughing for the last couple of minutes! I get to thinking about my OCD. Your list is off the hook! That's about a weeks worth of typing for me. LoL! I think I am working with like 30 varieties or am going to try too but, I gotta figure out the growth patterns and feeding and such of each and so forth and that is like WOW! More power to you brother! Cheers pal!

that is a big list!

i grew aunt molley's ground cherry last year and they are a nice addition, they don't taste like a tomato but had more of a caramel flavour.

put 3 plants in a large container and other than water, really just left them alone. by mid august i had these little ground cherries dropping all over the place - that is when they are ready to eat, the berry in its housing falls off the plant. i was giving bowl fulls away to neighbours, who had never had them before either. i would leave a bowl on the kitchen counter and the kids and wife would always be snacking on them.

the seeds are really, really tiny. the flowers are a pretty yellow with black inlay. i will grow them again this year and do the same as last year, 3 plants in 1 large container, enjoy berries in august.

Yep, that's a heck of a list.  Looking forward to watching the progress.

Thata's quite a list, indeed.
Good luck with your grow.

Why does it bring me pleasure to see someone else with a list as long an unmanageable as mine??  :P
Glad I could ease your pain.

A true OCD person would've put a popsicle stick into EVERY cell. The horror!

Awesome list, though...
I am going back to get the ones I missed now!  Actually wasn't going to put any markers in yet and just use a spreadsheet.  Then I figured when it came time to move to bigger containers, I would loose confidence that I labeled right, or computer would crash or something.

So what's going on over here, Justin?  Any news?

Well by the time I get done reading you guys glogs, I am tired and ready for bed, no energy to even comment.  I don't know how you guys keep so many updates rolling.  Its been a while, was a little slow few setbacks, some malnurished sick looking plants that weren't even photo worthy.   Got some nutrients going now and things looking a bit better.   Grow list needs some updating, had a few failures and added a few that need some mentioning.   But the pics below show where I am at.  most still long way to go, but with 2 months to plant out, they will be fine as long as they stay healthy.

This tray is the farthest along.  Most were very yellow a few weeks ago and looking like the sick runt in the lower left corner, but most have rebounded quite well and really shot up in the last few days.  Some outside time has helped as well.

These guys are next.  They were pretty yellow also.  I suspect I didn't calculate enough nutrients in the initial starter mix and let it go to long without anything.  Looked like needed lot of nitrogen.  These are turning the corner also, looking much better.

These guys are next.  Little smaller yet but looking pretty healthy.  Hopefully corrected all my nutrient issues for these so they won't suffer like the first guys did.

Last of the hot peppers sprouting here.  Everythings up except a few chocolate habs that may or may not germinate.

Few random chiles left in there needing a bigger home this week.  Cells on the right are starts of the sweet / bell peppers.  Tomatoes will get started in here this weekend or next week probably.

Looking good to me, can't get much worse looking than this sweet datil

Started adding some lime to my watering mix and i've seen some improvement in the plants. I'm pretty sure I had some bad nute lock.

Are the purple ones the Yaki brown? Mine have a nice foliage like that.

You've been busy, Justin.  The plants are looking great.  A little bit of yellow at this point is no biggie if they're destined for to be planted out in ground.

Dang, Micheal, that's pretty strange looking.  Is it greening up with the change?  Except for the green leaves at the bottom, I could almost believe that's a genetic thing.

It was almost white and the top leaves where almost see through. looks like it's starting to get a little green in the veins now and more of a yellow. I'm thinking it's going to bounce back. Most the other plants that where having problems are already showing improvement and darkening with lots of new growth.
