BurkeasaurusRex 2015 Glog: First time

So this my first time growing peppers…. Well technically second, last year I just threw some seeds in a pot and hoped for the best. Results were less than impressive to say the least.
With countless hours spent researching on THP I think I came up with a strategy for my grow this year and I’m all in!

Enjoy!

Peppers Sown:
                             Chinese 5 Color
                             Serrano
                             7 Pot Brain Strain Red/Yellow
                             Fatalii Yellow
                             Bhut Yellow
                             Giant Carrot
                             Czech Black
                             Jalapeno
                             Cayenne
                             Urfa biber
                             Naglah Brown
(And a roma tomato….. shhhhhh don’t tell anyone)

Went with the Tupperware method for germination. Started 1/10/2015

So while the seeds were germinating and to keep myself occupied I decided to build a grow box and make my own LED lighting rig. I based the lighting off of Juanitos design using the aluminum U channel and 3W Red, Blue and a few white LEDs.

Drill and tap, tap, taparoo!

These things are like the sun! Well I guess that’s kind of the point right?

The 4x2x2 grow box lined with Mylar. It helps when your father-n-law has a CNC machine to make quick work of the cutouts and is a master woodworker :) . I have a video of it being ripped out and I’ll post it later.

After the LED bars are installed

That's the spirit,go ALL-IN I say.Nice list you have there.I also went with the container method on some seeds.I guess 50/50 so far I've SOWED seeds in plug trays and the container method.I would say that neither method is better than the other. The container method in my opinion is a huge space saver though.Good luck on your grow!

Thanks!

Everything looks so far so good I think.

Wooooo Hoooo transplant time for the first batch!

Happy pepper plants so far.

Seeing as this is my first real grow if anyone see’s anything I’m doing wrong I would love some suggestions.

Is the roma intended for future sauce making?

Is this also your first time growing tomatos?

Nice lookin plants, btw...
HAHA Good idea! I was just trying to grow tomatoes. I'm definitely doing that now.

everything looks mighty fine ... I like the growbox ... looks like the LEDs are the right choice judging by the plants

Thanks tsurrie! Yeah the plants seem to like them. I used Juanitos design for the lights and it works well. WAAAAAYYYYY cheaper than buying an actual LED grow light.

This is freeken awesome. Where did you get the leds from???

Thanks Yellowfin! I got the LEDs off ebay, then with a little soldering and an LED driver. BAM! LED rig :)

These are the ones I purchased.

The U channel you can get at Home Depot, I believe the size was 3/4 inch

Nice grow box/light set-up.

Your plants look great.

Thanks Paul!

Thanks for this. Kinda kicking myself now. Just bought two LED units. I think I got a pretty good deal but dang it sure would have been awesome to customize it the way you did. Heck will probably still end up doing this.

Your soil plants look super happy but Ive got to say your grow set up is screaming hydroponics!! You should give it a shot with one or two plants on your next batch :P

I may give that a shot in the future. I'm still a noob at this stuff so going the traditional-ish route right now, but i guess I could try and ghetto rig something to test it out :). More Research! Muhahaha.

I may do up an arduino controller to test soil moister and pH that will control a pump for misting the plants. Depends on how much time I have.

I think the LED set up ran me around 30-40 bucks total just FYI if you intend on doing it.

And thanks for the kind words! I'm glad people like it.

I have my set up sort of "ghetto rigged". I have one of my hydro plants growing in just a coffey can with an air stone. Very simple and cheap to do. You should check out my glog!

Was wondering.......Did you wait long from China getting those parts? I was about to hit the purchase button but saw estimated delivery dates not until mid march

It was a bit longer but i thought it was worth the wait because of how cheap they were. They came in earlier than the estimated date though. I think I waited 2 weeks. Look at amazon you may be able to find them in the in the US. Search for the wattage and then the specific wave length you would like to use.

I've been told you don't really need the white LEDs if you don't want them but i figured it filled in the rest of the spectrum just FYI.
