'Smart Home' tech

Anyone into knowing or using this stuff?

I want to start on this house with at least a decent media server.

Don't buy anything that has a proprietary protocol ... No x10 or Q10 or any of those types of systems ...

You want things to operate over TCP/HTTP, so that you can use the full complement of debugging and sniffing gear that you always use (wireshark, tcpdump, socat, netcat, charles or whatever etc) ...

All of these new devices listening in your home ... well, that's not my cup of tea ... no Samsump smart tv's, no Nest (Google) A/C controller, and no Amazon Echo shit either ...

Well there's the new smart electric, gas, and water meters that are being forced on us. All your pc's, phones, and tablets are already audio and visual spies if the right people want to watch or listen. Smart appliances... Gaming consoles... Even my bluray player has wifi...

There's all the info given away every time you use a credit or debt card.

May as well give up man. It's going to take something larger than a few holdouts to stop this evolution.
It was 2006 when the FBI used a cellphone mic to bust some mob boss. Just turned it on remotely, listened, recorded, arrested.

And they're a few echelons behind on the tech than the private and bigger govt sectors.

Yeah, I know. It all sucks.

Your phone knows your gait too, from the gyro - so it knows when YOU have it, and not someone else ...

Well at least when it's not an iphone you can take the battery out.

Oh look I can stream from my laptop's Windows Media Player over wifi to my wifi enabled Blu-Ray player.
