Drought in CA

Just wondering how this has affected your growing in CA?
The reservoirs are dangerously low once again so conservation is a must now.
Only growing a few plants this season and all are Thai Dragon just for the hell of it.

I've taken my backyard lawn out and put in a firepit, ground cover and some fruit trees. I still have allot of pepper plants and tomato's growing. I'm going to buy some mulch to put on top for the trees and plants to protect them and conserve on water usage.

Aquaponics is so 2009 dude, get with the program

Sorry to hear about that though, I wish I could give you some of ours during hurricane season XD

I just watched a few youtube vids on the clay pot method. I will be using them for sure this year.

;-) You know how it is now!

I might try to acquire some pots this year on my trip back to the US later this month so I can give this a try over here in Japan.

IMO, it's a complete non-issue.  Taking an average shower uses more water than is required daily by most pepper hobbyists.  Last year, even in the middle of our Aridzona summer, my ~18 plants didn't need more than ~10 gallons a day.  Compared to agriculture and some big industries, that's not even a blip on the graph...  If you really want to save water in your house, fix the leaky toilet flap, buy a low-use washing machine, replace part of the front lawn with xeriscape foliage, etc.

Everyone, what's your average monthly water usage?  I usually get by with one CCF per month, sometimes two when the fractions of a unit accumulate.  (One CCF = 100 cubic feet = 748 gallons.)That's 30~40 gallons a day.  Beat that!  :)

All media is bias.  From what I have read, although industry consumption is the problem non industry consumption is what is starting to be regulated.  Is that true?

I do my part to conserve. I haven't watered my front yard this year and its still 2/3 green but slowly dying. The neighbors are still watering. But no one will accuse me of not doing my part. I told my daughter no more baths a few months ago. 5 min max showers as well.

RedSavina - What laws / rules are coming out that effect you and other folk living there?  Curious to know the difference between reality and the media.

The Governor has asked people to cut back 25% whatever that means? I let the lawn die, we have a new high efficiency washer but it's just my wife and I so there's not much laundry. I try and catch all the rain water that I can but I was only able to get about 100 gallons so far. I am using Dutch Clover as a living mulch in my containers to help conserve water. I didn't plant my tuberous Dahlias this year as they need lots of water.

My lawn is looking a bit dirty, but other than that, I have not changed any of my habbits. I use a very small amount of water to begin with. So they can take my 25% and shove it! LOL

I agree this is the real problem.

Also, the gov. is subsidizing farms to not grow. They get paid by the square foot of non-utilized grow area (I hear it's a decent amount too).

Oh yeah, they are trying to pass a bill, very soon or already attempted, to fine or charge more for the utility. But California is filled with plenty of wealthy people that wouldn't think twice about paying more to keep their grasses green. And they have the biggest lawns.

This would just mean that the poor will be forced by circumstance to conserve and the rich will be able to continue loving life free of cares (and support their favorite politicians further [$$])

if you are serious about conserving water... drop those damned fabric grow containers.

they waste shit loads of water.

True, but when it's 110 outside, the evaporative cooling makes all the difference.  Even the low-mid 100s you'll find in Californee are hard on the roots.

Waste is a problem everywhere. Businesses are most likely the main culprits. However, it's the members of congress that are shills for the oil companies and whoever else wants to pay them. Energy/utility consumption is going to be everyone's problem soon enough. More effort needs to be put towards how to conserve what we have and make it sustainable. Humans go around tearing up and using and abusing every resource we have.
But it makes money so congress takes their check and passes bills that allow it to continue. Supposedly there is a bill that was passed that makes gas stations put any biofuels in above ground tanks, because they are potentially hazardous to the ground. (Translation) if we make you store it above ground most stations won't be able to afford it and big oil can keep pumping our rears while we pump gas.
