I'm pretty sure it is a harvestman spider. Spider is actually a misnomer, it's an arachnid but in another order known as Opiliones. They do this weird thing where they aggregate and form massive clumps for weeks to months. The biggest known was 70,000 of these little guys all balled up. Nobody knows why they do it.

I thought it was a camel cricket that´d halfway dug himself into the pod, but i can see it being a ¨Harvestman" aka Daddy Longlegs...  I´ve seen them clumped up like that before.  I was in NC once, and one building had like half a dozen clumps of Daddy Longleggers on the walls... each clump had hundreds (thousands?) of critters hugged up on each other. I´d just assumed they were bangin´.
